Why do people say life is a dream?

I've never understood this type of comment and quite frankly it makes me mad 

It seems odd to equate the waking state to the dream state.

I would love to hear people's rationale and take on this!

How different are the dream and waking states really? The important difference is that you take one of them much more seriously than the other. Regardless they’re both stories you made up.

the distinction would be people in the waking state are experiencing and in the dreaming state they are fake characters

no but upon waking its realized to be fake.

How about when you reach the end of this "dream" and then you realize it wasn't a dream you come right back to this same world as a new person.

First life was seen as real and then awakening happened and it started to have more dreamy qualities so then it was seen as a dream.

Whether we define it as real or a dream it IS and all definitions are happening within it.
