Eye contact issues.

17 posts in this topic

I'm having some problems in starting and maintaining eye contact, not just with women in particular, but with people in general. Does anyone have some advice in how they've overcome this issue?

Practice in the mirror with yourself. Really look into your own eyes for extended periods of time to get more comfortable with that weird feeling. I still have problems with looking at people in the eye when I’m telling them a story. I think it just takes practice and being ok with being uncomfortable.

Oh ok then, thanks for your advice.

Focus on the triangle area that is formed from the eyes and nose.

I would put as much effort into finding out why it’s uncomfortable... Had the same issue when I was younger.

I used to be unable to maintain eye contact but something changed with me and I honestly am not sure what it was, but I have an idea. The only thing I can remember (this was several years ago) is I started taking this substance called Phenibut which is kind of like Xanax. It melted away some of my social inhibitions and I no longer had trouble looking someone in the eyes. The strange thing is I only took the substance a few times, but I never had issue with eye contact after those few experiences. Doesn't matter who the person is I can maintain eye contact for as long as a I want and I can't imagine there is a person in the world who I wouldn't be able to do it with. Not in a creepy way either it's very natural and I can seduce women with the way I do it as well.

Now obviously this is not some scientific study, I don't recommend you go out and purchase this substance because it's extremely addictive and can actually kill you if you take too much. But a lot of people use it for anxiety which is the underlying cause for why you have trouble with eye contact.

That you for your advice. Personally I'd like to not take drugs or whatever hallucinatory substance if I can do more natural techniques instead, but again thanks I'll keep this in mind.

I've had this issue for as far back into my elementary years. For whatever reason, human faces scare me a bit. I'm not sure if it's related to a past life or some earlier movie about faces or something about other eyes turning me to stone or whatever. I've avoided looking directly at the eyes, sometimes looking down and away to parts of the ground.

@Danioover9000 Ground yourself in their eye colour.

Notice their eye colour, and then keep repeating their eye colour in your mind.

Thanks. I always tell myself if I talk to strangers 'maintain eye contact, maintain eye contact. Keep looking at their eyes'.

This may be slightly off topic but I've found the following to be true,

Don't make eye contact with someone who is angry or antagonistic. It feeds their ego while robbing you of your chi energy.

Do some research online as to how people’s eyes move and why, in regard to memory, true for them / not true for them, etc, etc. It’ll give ya something practical to watch thus maintaining eye contact, and at the same time you’ll notice the thoughts you ‘leave’ eye contact to focus on, and why.

I forgot to mention that I have some partial blindness in boths eyes  so I'm having to try to look past that dot to see faces as well.

If you sort of force it, it’ll work then not then work then not etc. Rollercoaster. If you understand the aversion and see through it, there’ll be no rollercoaster, and your blind spot(s) will no longer be an issue. And I’d be extra careful about any expectations of timelines, and extra noticing of the momentum accumulating. May take a while but the orientation will feel great. Better & better.
