What is the ratio between you experiencing what other people created versus actively searching what you want to create is a good indicator to how superficial/lost or not you are in your life.

In the first case, it's the hedonics happiness, which is almost always instant and easy to get, but also ephemeral (which always bring pain).

The second is eudaimonic happiness, which is a less flashy but more deep kind of happiness, and it is everlasting.

If your main focus is the eudaimonic part of your life, not only you'll be more consistently happy, but you'll enjoy more the hedonics stuff, without clinging to them (which will supress the pain part of them), assuming that you're doing a spiritual and self-actualization work of course.
