How Did Jordan Peterson Become So Articulate?

44 posts in this topic

His articulation comes from the way his brain is wired in the sense that he gets an immense emotional payoff by being overly intricate in his speech.
It's an art and a form of personal expression analogous Bach's compositions, which are extremely complex and intricate.

His father taught him to read very early on and he became very proficient at it, probably because it was a way to get approval from his father. Also as far as i can see he has great working memory, memory in general, and a great ability to interconnect concepts.

Compare either of these figures to someone like Noam Chomsky to see the difference between YouTube pseudo-intellectuals and an actual intellectual who's made important contributions to several different fields of knowledge.

Noam Chomsky is actually the first person who comes to mind when I hear the word "articulate". No fluff in choice of words, maximally insightful. He seems to be quite deliberate about this as well. Took me 10 seconds to find this:

2:24 "If we can say things simply so that people can understand them, we should."

It's one thing to approach verbal noises like art. It's another to convey thoughts concisely. Then again, language and thought are two sides of the same coin. I'm not gonna lie, I like a good mix :P

Man, if only we could get Noam Chomsky’s concise word choices with Joe Rogan’s delivery style...

Most university professors are very articulate. Not particularly a rarity.

@Leo Gura, I grew up without being able to learn in school. I couldn't read properly. I couldn't concentrate at all. Furthermore, I can not retain information well.

Even if I'm striving to understand a concept and do my best to study it for hours on end, I can hardly recall it, and after a few days have gone by, I forget about it.

I read a page, for example, and I have no idea what I've been reading about — to make sense of that page, I have to read it slowly for at least ten times. It takes a lot of time just to grasp an idea.

So it is clear: my working memory doesn't work well. It is also clear that I do have a problem.

A professional would say to me that I have dyslexia.

Because I believe the brain is plastic, I still continue to write and read as much as I can, despite the fact that I'm seeing no progress and that I'm feeling hopeless.

Maybe one day I'll be able to be totally articulate.

With JP, I feel people often confuse being articulate with being charismatic, emotional, engaging and entertaining. He is articulate, but it's not his main selling point.

This is why I say he is a stupid person's idea of a smart person. JP is articulate but much of the meaning behind what he is saying isn't all that deep or profound.

You're biased towards Jordan Peterson. I wonder why?

I wouldn't say biased. I just can see through his dog and pony show. He touches on some good values found in stage blue but much beyond that he is a dud. A lot of lousy thinking people will delegate their thought process to him because he is using big words and kinda/sorta espousing views that support their conservative world view. I think my description of him is apt.

Jordan Peterson is essential because he offers great content to men out there who feel lost.

It definitely helped me a lot by internalizing a set of his values.

We must be concerned with building a decent civilization, otherwise bad happens. It's a simple as that!

Jordon Peterson fans : "JP's such an concise and articulate speaker!"

JP when asked a direct question about his beliefs :

(Here's the actual clip, but the fact that a satirical show from the 2000s about a half man half bird half angel is reminiscent of Jordy's answer to this same question is illustrative).

Like I said, I’m not totally against everything he says and I do recognize he has played an important role in many peoples lives. I can also acknowledge his short comings as well and see in what other ways he isn’t helpful.

Hello.

I used to watch Jordan Peterson for hours.

What impresses me about Jordan is his way of articulating his ideas; he formulates his thoughts in the most concise manner, clearly.

And I wonder how was he able to become so articulate?

It astounds me every time I'm listening to him.

Any tips?

Lots of reading, speaking to people and in his mind articulating his ideas. I wouldn't be surprised if he did speaking exercises as well, given how fluid he can switch and connect different ideas together, like talking faster, slower, louder, quieter, and so on.

Sounds like you have some disorder. Perhaps ADD or heavy metal toxicity.

For me learning has always been easy. Especially when I was young. It got a bit harder as I aged and got heavy metal buildup. When I detoxed it, it got easier again.

How did you detoxify yourself of heavy metals?

@Leo Gura @eTorro eTorro, you’re dyslexic. I know this because I’m dyslexic. You should have been assessed by an education specialist when you were at school/college/university who would have then needed to provided help and allowances to support your education. I’m sorry that didn’t happen. I know the condition wasn’t recognised in the 80s when I was at school but my mum pushed for it.

Yes! I know I am. It bothers me because I won't be able to write books or make videos on YouTube. :(

Don't limit yourself. The previous Norwegian prime minister had dyslexia.

A career in academia, and in particular teaching undergraduates, is basically a non-stop bootcamp training in formulating complex ideas and philosophical structures into easily digestible chunks...

hmmm...

We have threads on this forum about heavy metal detox. And I'll be doing a video about it at some point.
