From smart to dumb (phone, I hope)

3 posts in this topic

I got really tired of my smartphone addiction and decided to go full retard by downgrading myself to a flip phone. It's a fancier one (Nokia 2720) with still Whatsapp on it, but the writing has to be done old school with the number buttons. I only use WA, text messages, calling, and alarm clock on my dummy. A two-megapixel camera is a real gem. There are surprisingly a lot of hurdles to go through when not owning a smartphone with proper apps in it.

I'm on day 4 currently and it was been quite a journey. I've decided to try it for 3 weeks at first but hoping this is a permanent change in the long run. Obviously, I still have my Macbook so I'm not in any real danger here, but there have been many great insights already. I feel like smart devices are taking too much of our time for sure and distracting and sedating us from the most important things. And yeah, I sound preachy, cause I am.

I'm tracking my dumb journey here and maybe even inspire some of you folks to join me on my quest! There are loads of practical incentives to keep us using our smartphones, so it takes some effort to unplug.

 Day 5

Some cool new things are happening:

  • I can remember most of my dreams from last night - this has been really difficult for me before
  • I don't anymore wake up already dysregulated, instead, I keep playing back my previous nights dreams in the morning
  • People's reactions are adorable:
    • So what do you DO when you don't have a smartphone?
    • I couldn't do that.
    • Why would you do that? I suggest you get a decent phone for yourself. Do you need to borrow money or something?

Day 8

I have been taking more time to do my meditations and I've meditated for 30 minutes a day for several days in a row. I want to up that to 60 minutes, which I have not been able to do previously at all. Keeping a journal has been consistent for the first time ever as well: I record my dreams in the morning, my gratitudes in the evening and also draw a few sketches every night. Yesterday went to the gym and had a 1-hour walk outside, so fitness is excellent.

Edit: Also had a proper phone call with a friend for over an hour. Previously we just would have messaged each other some memes or something.
