can dead people be aware of our prayers to them is it benificial ?

I am intersted in the idea of praying for our loved ones who have died , why do prophets like Muhammed promote this idea that when you pray for your loved ones your prayer goes to them although they are not an ego any more as it is imagined in our mind.

also Muhammed said when you pray for him god return his soul to his body to pray back for you.
