Did I go about this the wrong way?

I was a college student with a 3.5 GPA and a few scholarships in my pocket. I thought it was going to be easy-peasy to live my life the way I wanted, but then life happened.

After coming home from an 8 hour shift, I had to do homework for the class I was missing. At the same time, my mom would call me asking for help with her work. Even though being hired at my mom's work would be great, it would mean that I could only see her on Sunday evenings and any friends that weren't also working there. The best laid plans of mice and men, et cetera et cetera....

At this point, I had fallen into full-time student-mode while juggling work. I started thinking about other things like what other careers to pursue other than Teaching or how to make more money for myself? Did I go about this the wrong way?
