What's Your Book Note-taking System?

10 posts in this topic

I use onenote for my note taking. I read a chapter in a book (usually on kindle for PC, and put onenote and the kindle software side by side ) and outline the important ideas, focusing on both minimalism and breadth.

as an example:

Six Pillars of Self-Esteem - Chapter 1 - X

  1. main idea
    1. sub-idea
      1. explanation
      2. example
      3. details
      4. etc.
  2. main idea
  3. etc.

I usually have between 10 to 30 main ideas for a given chapter

I then review them multiple times throughout the day for better retention

also what helps is devoting periods of time for contemplation on the content of the book, analysing it and relating it to your current knowledge and past experiences

That's great! (I've also read The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem, amazing book!)

@Afonso I have multiple note taking books. One of which is for Actualized notes, application of actualized principles, and a daily journal.

I don't take any written notes. I let what is written resonate and I know that whats really important I will remember if I have to.  This doesn't apply if it's about books for studying or work or something like that. But spiritual books or psychological books or self help or whatever, I just let them ring in my soul and see what resonates and penetrates.

I use cintanotes, and hashtag #bookname #author #theme for each piece of advice I get from books/articles/...

I have 2 instances of cintanotes, one for my creative project, and one for lucid-dreaming techniques/journal.

I found this method very organic, because each dots connect to each other, without real hierarchy or plan.

Also tipping a keyword in the research bar pops-up the tags or the content of the nodes.

(For a hierarchy way of organizing stuff, I would use xmind)

Mostly I just retype sentences that I think can be useful to re-read from a book to MS word, or I just highlight them in a book.

I haven`t found much use of notes, when something hits me from the book I stop reading and contemplate on it until there is nothing more popping up, then I assume reading. Like from The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem, when something hit me as important and I recognized the experience from my own past I stopped and tried to remember and relive as much as I could to make sense of how it has affected my beliefs and self-image. I find that it is a much more effective way to learn for me.

It feels like that I will memorize everything anyway on some level and when the time comes it will pop up from my subconsciousness in a form of insight or a relative thought to some experience. There is very little I can hold consciously at one moment anyway, I rely on my subconscious to make sense of things as it does anyway.

I'm struggling a bit with my notes. I spend quite some time in my car every day, I've created the habit of listening to audio books or podcasts.  Great way of making good use of your time in the car. But, obviously, it's not possible to make notes while driving. I've tried making notes at the end of each drive, but this is not ideal.

Apart from this issue, I find it hard to keep a good system of taking notes. I've tried different systems/apps, google docs, One note, note books, etc, nothing really sticks. I would like to create a system where I keep my rough notes and then, every week or so, transfer the best ideas to THE notebook.

I'll follow this thread, hoop to get some good ideas.
