What are your thoughts on LinkedIn? Do you have any success stories to share? I'm thinking of buying the premium account for visibility seeing the fact that alot of companies and businesses people have an account.

@AlexB I can only recommend Linkedin. In fact it's the only social media network I use! But I only connect with people who I have a work relationship with. This way, when I'm looking for a new job, I know to whom to reach out to. People change jobs all the time and this way I know what they are up to and how I can contact them. Former employers have reached out to me offering me jobs, as well as recruiters. Besides the connections, you get alerts about job openings in your area and you can connect with people who work for a company you are interested in. It has a ton more features, but I keep it simple.

If you wanna make good work connections, go to industry expos and conventions and network the old-fashioned way. Far superior in my opinion. Just one convention -- well-worked -- could change your life. And there are expos for virtually any field.

Agreed, human contact is the most important factor in networking. In 100 handshakes, you may count on 2 real people who may help you. Thousands of connections on LI are random, unless you have a skype conversation with each of your connection.
