Neurofeedback for ADHD & 100x Meditation

7 posts in this topic

Hey everyone, I have been researching neurofeedback for a while now and I haven't had too much luck with leads, it seems to be a tough nut to crack for me. So I hope I can ask here directly to get some specific pointers in where I can go learn more about neurofeedback.  I've done A LOT of digging already. Any significant leads for information is greatly appreciated.  (And yes I am willing to drop $2k-3k for a proper setup as Leo recommends.) (I live in Canada BTW if that changes anything for sourcing equipment, I'm pretty sure I can get shipments from the US easily.)

My goals with neurofeedback are as follows:

  • Healing my ADHD
  • Learning how to meditate 100x more effectively.

I want to know things like:

  • A structure or model to help me get a grasp on the nitty gritty of neurofeedback.
  • What theory I need to learn to put my practice into context.
  • Where can I learn more about neurofeedback so I know exactly what the heck I am doing, what I'm looking for, etc.
  • What equipment should I buy? Where?
  • Personal Stories with using Neurofeedback to 100x their meditation or cure their ADHD
  • Etc.

Thanks in advance.

I also plan to utilize the following to further progress my healing my ADHD:

  • Kriya Yoga (Currently In the process of reading Kriya Yoga books)
  • Psychedelics (Ongoing)
  • Nootropics (I have acquired Armodafinil, Modafinil, 5-HTP, NALT, L-theanine, Lions Mane, Korean Red Ginseng, a couple others.)
  • Heavy metal detox protocols. (Still Have to research it.

I forgive my past, I release the future, and I honor how I feel in the present.

The money you should put on something, which is for you, give them to people who really needs help others.

Long sitting is must, start with 30 minutes go up to 3-4 hours every day, if you can.

Do not miss any day for meditation.

Do your meditation in darkness and silence.

Just be aware of the thoughts, do not attached with them. For instance thought of i am bored, dont take it as it is you, watch that thought.

Surrender and accept everything that you are facing during the day, watch those thoughts too. Which is the active meditation.

When you have adhd slow down, slow yourself. Do it everything in slow motion. While you doing that watch the thoughts again, do not attach with them.

Good advice, but I disagree with the darkness part -- I never found that necessary or even useful. Any particular reason you advise that? Other than that it worked for you? Silence, though... Yes, that would be optimal.

Meditation can basically cure ADHD, especially when it's taken really far. Without a teacher, you're likely going to hit a lot of sticking points, and that's why I'd recommend Culadasa's TMI.

“silence is the language of god,
all else is poor translation.”

Rumi

when you hear silence speaks to you without voice or words , thats when you will get it.

Definitely. No one needs a teacher, silence and darkness are enough.

@ZenSwift "Heartmind Alchemy Lab"-Facebook group.

I've talked to neurologues who do research on neurofeedback/meditation etc.

Just go in that group and ask your question. They probably have studies.

If you want the best advice, you're going to find it there.

I personally use muse meditation headband, it helps with increasing concentration because it shows you exactly when you're concentrated and when not. However, I can't guarantee it's useful for your situation.

Still and train lightly and diligently the fine control of the attention. Then inquire and feel:

What is true? Turn away from the untrue — you might as well not assume that anything objective is outside the untrue.

What feels good?

My background is that I have ADD (without the hyperactive part) and while I know about neurofeedback as a tool, I haven't explored it (yet), simply because it was not available to me, and while I'm not comfortable with the word "cure", today I'm doing quite well without any help from medication or machines that are outside my budget.

If you go down this road, please let us know what it's like! I have no doubt that neurofeedback can be valuable as a tool to train concentration skills.

However: this inability to concentrate, is really a myth.

Have you ever wondered why you can hyperfocus for days on end, without a lot of sleep or food, when you actually give a shit about a topic or project?

So in those moments, suddenly you are cured, but then in the day to day, mostly you have a disorder?

Doesn't add up, is my conclusion.

In my experience, the road to healing is paved with admitting things I don't want to admit.

I can't focus on what I'm trying to do, not because my brain is malfunctioning, but because I don't actually care about it.

Oh, but I do care about it! I want to be X, Y and Z. This is what I am trying to be. So I have to care.

Trying to make myself care, hasn't worked so well for me.

That did mean having to admit:

  • I didn't actually care about college. I just wanted to fit in with society and have the validation of getting a degree, to prove I'm smart and worthy.
  • I didn't actually care about being on time for a meaningless job
  • I didn't actually care about what the people I was trying to listen to, were saying to me, because my creative and out-of-the-box thoughts could run circles around their boring, linear thinking. It just wasn't interesting to me.
  • I didn't even actually care about showering every day, in some periods of my life. Or feeding myself properly. Or my health. Now of course that has evolved, and for the most part I take good care of myself. But it's important to admit, that I do that because I want to. And when I didn't do it, however much I tried to tell myself I should want to, I didn't truly care about it deep down. I felt I was just fine without it.

But Erik, I have to do X Y and Z for survival. I have no choice. Do you want me to fail/become homeless?

Of course there is value in learning to concentrate on things you deep down don't care about in that moment. It's valuable and necessary.

There is meditation, and several tricks and tools you can use to accomplish that. Also neurofeedback.

But fundamentally, all of that is patching up weaknesses versus playing to your strengths.

And you will be much more effective and satisfied in spending most of your time playing to your strengths.

So while it's important to patch up skills where you need them for survival, my long term roadmap to a fulfilled and "cured" life (I put cured between quotes because I don't support the view that ADHD is a disorder), is to become more self-honest about the activities and topics, big and small, that you actually, deep down actually care about, and aligning your life with those. Concentration problems will vanish like snow in spring.
