Video game addiction

16 posts in this topic

I used to play games a lot when I was younger to escape my feelings cause I was abused. After watching Leo I took a longgggg break, like 3-4 years cause I was focusing on my life.

recently however, I’ve been just in a loop of playing 2-3 games periodically throughout the day, just binging it. I still get my shit done like cleaning the house and getting money for rent. It just feels like I’m stuck u know?

ive seen leo say “just play until you’re disgusted with yourself” yet I feel like I’m already at that point but I still can’t stop. I’m a 3D artist and I feel like I burnt myself out cause I was going really hard for 2 months straight. Maybe I need this break?

any suggestions?

@UNZARI Become more conscious that this activity is not producing happiness in you.

Also, you must find a healthier alternative to replace it with.

Dislodging a bad habit requires finding a good habit.

When it comes to playing games, the best approach I've found is to raise your standards and only play the bestest games. Which naturally are so rare you can't play too many of them. Raise your standards so that you have to wait a year or two before a great game releases. Don't consume games, film, books, and other media unless it's top notch stuff.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

@UNZARI This seems to be very close and under same branch, computer/technology, 3D(games/models).

Almost to be an professional tennis player and for change play some table tennis for fun.

How does this part look like?

@DIDego good point honestly. I will give myself credit in that when I play the games I study the 3D models they used and think about how they made them

@UNZARI Ye, playing have not been a total waste of time, but seems closer to be sort of another way of working rather than as relaxation and recreational time, all day long?

Can you find inspiration elsewhere that gives nuances to your work/digital art, "time of from the branch" but maybe gives your creativity more room, so it not get's burnt as well?

Do you have or had something outside this branch of "3D world" during the day's?

What did you do these 3-4 years?

Pandemic have isolated many for a long period and you maybe have some other interest or hobbies that been frozen for a while and wait's for you to give more balance during the day's?

Love this.

I feel like the first part can carry over to many other addictions like porn and masturbation.

I forgive my past, I release the future, and I honor how I feel in the present.

if it is possible for you, there are rehab programs for game addicts. it`s a serious addiction, it`s like with weed, people don`t see weed as addictive so everyone tries to make sugar of it, if you are aware that sugar is addictive/toxic, you can maybe get an idea about how you are addicted to games. if you are burned out or depressed your gratification system is demanding, self esteem low, it`s best to surround yourself with people who are really kind to you. i guess actualized org is also in some sense running like a game, even though the topics are not game topics. self actualization in itself can become an addiction, the need to help can be an addiction, and spirituality can become an addiction, some people might even not be true with their personality and play t/rolls. you could even develop games which help against game addiction (to make it less severe like stroop effect games).

practically you could do:

play some stroop effect games

get all game related hardwear out of your home - have a place outside of home for work.(be careful about starting to be a home denier in both scenarios)

work specifically on habits which make you more connected to the physical world

@Leo Gura  does playing chess count as healthy alternative? Lol I fuckin love chess it’s pretty high quality too

naw but I definitely have gotten better with media consumption. I deleted all of my personal social media’s and only kept YouTube and this forum for healthy information. The games I play right now are challenging and engaging mentally but they still leave me feeling hollow inside.

thank you man I think I will slowly (or quickly if possible) replace playing with meditation or force myself to write or draw instead.

I feel this gaming addiction arose because I deleted social media because I was very addicted to those, since I was in 6th grade

@mememe I agree and thank you. I don’t think it’s gotten to the point where I need a rehab center but that definitely an option. Eventually I want to get to the root cause. I’ve been addicted to at least 1 thing my entire life. Games, sugar, tv, cigarettes, cocaine, social media, caffeine, talking to girls, even Leo’s videos. I want to get to a point where I don’t need anything to be satisfied

@DIDego wow that’s true I never really thought about it that way. I’m very passionate about my art and maybe I’m still working by playing games (of course I still do enjoy them for themselves)

during the 3-4 year break I started doing graphic design and focusing on a relationship in highschool with a girl I’m still in love with 5 years later. I feel like Leo’s videos, my girlfriend, and art replaced video games in that period.

graphic design is still something I love as well as making music. I have no hobbies that don’t relate to art in some way.

difficult to get to that point. it`s really a bit too much asked to stay away of every feedback loop you encounter. social contacts is not really an addiction, getting attention and being liked is not an addiction but a basic need, also finding food you enjoy is not an addiction if you are keeping a healthy balance, what is the alternative? no food?. i certainly would have to move to a place where mangogogos and avocados grow if i would want to satisfy my addictions. so it is really tough to stay away from what is addictive. stay away from toxicity though. sometimes it`s about the not doing stuff more than about the doing but you can`t replace all toxic stuff with not doing, because that is also toxic.

What is a high quality game exactly? What kind of game would be a high standard game? A creative game like Space Engineers or a numbers game like Satisfactory? Is it also the studio and how the employees are treated what makes a best game?
