Is there a way to speed up the process of exhausting a desire to transcend your addiction to it?

There seems to be a tricky play here to balance that of fulfilling desires and maintaining discipline. I remember Ken Wilber once saying something about “to taste something until you’re full”.
Also from another source the idea of the permanent witness bossing the automaton (body and instinctual drives) around. Every now and then though to throw it a bone or let it off it’s leash so as to pacify it.

@Zion  No, I don't believe it's possible to accelerate yourself toward rock bottom in order to bounce off of it faster.  The fact that you're even considering such a possibility shows me that you may be approaching that bottom in some way, however.

The way i see and understand desire, it is the constant expectation of something in the future, thus it is the avoidance of present moment satisfaction.

One desires to be loved only when one is not satisfied with themself in the present moment. When you are truly at peace with yourself, there is no desire for anyone else to love you.

Kinda...

say for example you need alcohol.

And you know you need it to stop yourself from feeling sad.

You can feel the sadness so deep and fully that the need for alcohol goes away.

That is very simplistic of course, reality is always more complex.

Try not to give it fuel. the more you feed it the more energy it has. This includes negative feelings towards having those desires. Be aloof to them, without participation, and gradually the desire will weaken.

Experience satisfying that desire CONSCIOUSLY!

If you do it CONSCIOUSLY, you will notice it doesn't fully satisfy you. So you will be ready to move on to fry bigger fish.

You need to fully realize its potential by excessively doing it. See everything it has to offer and then use that as reference for later.

I remember forcing myself to masturbate every day for a whole month just to observe how it feels each time and what it is providing me. I also went 30 days without doing it several times, just to see how my libido escalates and how it feels when I finally decide to do it. I've basically seen everything these sort of regimens have to offer, and I have become comfortable with doing it or not doing it to any sort of degree because I already know exactly what it has to offer.

Most of the time you experience a sort of mini FOMO, where you feel like you're missing out big time by not indulging in something. If you have decent reference for how indulging in that feels like, you realize that you've already experienced everything it has to offer, and that doing it right now won't really satisfy you or change anything in the big picture.

Describe a thought.

@Leo Gura Sometimes I feel as if instead of a mere understanding that a desire does not fully satisfy one, consciously feeling it allows one to feel the lack of full satisfaction, along with a certain degree of satisfaction. But both combine together to form something higher than the sum of their parts and instead lead to a keen and subtle sense of satisfaction with that desire or experience. And this satisfaction is much higher or deeper than the direct satisfaction a particular desire gives.

Is this understanding correct?

I agree.

To make my earlier point more nuanced, I would say that you overcome neediness and craving by allowing yourself to be fully satisfied by the thing you crave. So, if you really crave some hot sex, stop feeling guilty or reserved about it, HAVE IT! Have it so deeply and allow yourself to enjoy it so much that it fills that needy hole inside your soul.

And the way you prevent that from becoming an addiction is you always have your eyes towards something higher: Truth, Love, God, Consciousness, Life Purpose

What if it's porn or bullying people or getting in fights? There are real consequences, such as hiding away to fap, or arguments and being kicked out of places.

Moreso, what if you used your technique for if you injected heroin? Would you ever really get satsified or would it just kill you.. like with that one rat experiment

I believe visualization and logic plays a key role here. Logic in a sense of not letting your emotions getting the better of you, not letting yourself fall into any addictions or unhealthy patterns while indulging in a desire. While visualizing towards your purpose, not allowing yourself to stray too far from it.

If you have desires to harm people or yourself you gotta find healthier ways of dealing with that than acting it out.

Use common sense.

There is always consequences for pursing desires. Can't avoid that. I was talking about relatively healthy desires, not the desire to kick grandma in the face.

This is very likely a misinterpretation of what the Buddha actually said. The Buddha would have realized that to seek to let go of desire is also a desire and therefore wouldn't suggest such a fruitless pursuit. Based on my research what the Buddha actually suggested is that 'suffering is a consequence of the desire for things to be other than they are'. So he didn't say 'don't have desires', he said 'don't desire for things to be false'. In other words when your desires are aligned with what is true there's no suffering. Sadhguru's comment on this issue seems to be compatible with my theory.
