Should i Even Bother drinking Coffee Anymore?

I am very confused regarding coffee and caffeine in general.¬¬

Many people love coffee and praise it for its health benefits like the polyphenols . Dave Asprey even says: "f*ck kale, coffee should be at the top of  the pyramid regarding superFoods".

From my personal experience i don't like to drink a lot of coffee because it makes me physically dependent on it and i feel it robbs my of my energy levels. I have experimented twice to quite coffee/caffeine in the last year.

I quit coffee for 4 months and i was feeling great. Tons of Energy. No problems whatsoever.

Then i got back into drinking coffee everyday and it became a habit (unfortunately) for many months. Then the last 10-11 days i quit coffee/caffeine again and i had even more energy than ever before (after few days).

Then yesterday i got heavily influenced by Dave Asprey and decided to drink one cup of coffee today. I don't know if i did the right thing. I am afraid of coffee because i like it to much to be honest. I can restrain myself and drink only two cups a day though. 

Anyways after the 1st cup (50mg of caffeine) i wanted another one but i decided to do the emotional difficult thing and not drink another one.

Now i am considering whether i should consume coffee/caffeine for some days of the month for the supposed health benefits that everyone talks about or whether should i ditch it alltogether?

Can someone give me some solid advice and information based on research and personal experience?

Most benefits from these studies usually are very far fetched and downsides are deliberately reduced

IMO one random coffee here and there on rare occasion won't hurt very much, but there is a huge danger in daily consumption, even 1 cup a day

It destroys both your nervous system and your mental health, and also reportedly affects your gut in a very negative way  especially if you consume it on an empty stomach

People who boast themselves as "can't get through the day without my cup of coffee" are basically addicts

Dave Asprey promotes coffee and claims is very good on fasting also because it has polyphenols and helps feed the good bacteria in your gut.

It definetely is, if we are talking from benefit's for fasting perspective, I'm not taking away that and there is no contradiction

The problem is that Coffee and Caffeine have useful uses, yet they also have big side effects off of daily consumption. That's is why there is so much controversy about this subject

I personally don't like how coffee makes my consciousness feel and how it affects my gut (I can feel it too, even from drinking only 1 cup), so I just make the choice of not drinking it unless it is some very rare occasional dessert thing

@SQAAD My personal opinion: It is performance enhancement to your health detriment. 

But we are here for a purpose, If I am working 12 hour + days I am damaging my health OFC! But I am not here to be perfectly healthy, I am here to do shit. Thus coffee :) Just your jab of cortisol and adrenaline, and oxidative pathways

I drink coffee because I like the ritual and taste. The caffeine doesn't affect me that much. I believe in the health benefits. But make sure to cycle it. For example drink it only on the weekdays. Or drink it for 3 weeks, then stop for 1 week to let your adrenals rest. Switch to decaf on the off week.

Smoking also has benefits, it has been proved that smoking cigarettes reduces the risk of getting your femula broken or someshit like that.

The studies about the pros of coffee are the same. Freaking ridiculous. Whatever coffee gives you of benefits you can get it with good diet, supplements, vegetables, etc. All bullshit of people wanting to justify his use it's so obvious ?

Yeah i tend to agree with you. If i am being honest with myself i can't find any good reason to keep drinking rather than it is a pleasurable drug for me. That's the bottom line i think.

It is a drug and people like it very much.

@SQAAD  Here are some unshakeable advantages of coffee that I haven't seen anyone posting yet:

1. Amazing people repellent / fast conversation finisher : Bumped again into an annoying colleague in your workplace? No problem, blow some air on the fuckface after drinking black coffee and for sure he won't bother you any time soon.

2. Best drain opener : Ate too many bananas and now feeling stuck? No need to call the plumber and make a porn scene out of it. Drink some coffee and your drain will be unclogged.

3. Great compost. Assuming you use an organic coffee.

Lastly, on a more serious note, here is a rule of thumb for you. If there is a great debate over a certain subject and every research contradicts the previous one, then probably no one really has a definitive answer or there is more than one answer. For example: Recommended sleep quota, best diet and best training methods.

So just try, see how your body feels, enjoy and don't overdo it.

P.s. No, Starbucks is not a coffee, nor filter coffee. Use a cezve instead;)

No reason to drink coffee, it only tricks your system into thinking it's less tired than it is. Just get good sleep and eat healthy, you'll be full of natural energy. I used to drink it a lot but quit 2-3 years ago. No problem since.

I think Dave Asprey is awesome and I listened to several hours of interviews with him yesterday.

But I think he has one blindspot. For many people, caffeine causes many problems, others are not so sensitive. He's not so sensitive, so he just thinks everyone is like him (we all make that error sometimes)

But for people like you and me, caffeine causes tiredness, stress, anxiety, heart palpitations, terrible sleep, addiction, dependency, and ultimately burnout.

I cut it out completely and have been without tea or coffee for over a month (some decaf once every 2 weeks or so). Feels great because I have all the energy back, but I'm also relaxed and can sleep. So much better.

You've probably seen alex becker's videos on why caffeine is horrible and robs you of your energy, so I don't need to post them here.

I think some people can just digest it better and think everyone is like that. Nope. If the half-life of caffeine is 7 hours, that means that at night you still have a quarter of your morning cup and a third of your lunch coffee in your system roughly, which messes with your deep sleep, hurts your recovery and makes you feel groggy and in need of coffee in the morning.

Fuck that. If you want polyphenols, use a lot of olive oil and you're set. Don't risk adrenal fatigue syndrome and put your body through that shit day in and day out, I'd say.

 

Warning: quitting caffeine is hard. I've quit smoking and caffeine both multiple times, smoking is more brutal, but caffeine is a close second and way more sneaky.

First 7 days are shit. The next 2 weeks are okay, careful not to slip up because it's everywhere and every person fucking drinks it. After 30-40 days you're better than ever.

On the other hand, maybe it is because you haven't tasted a freshly roasted Arabica / Brazilian black coffee. consider that it is the same as one's experience of meat would only come from McDonald's. He would even say that he loves it...Until you bring the guy to a proper Asado in Argentina.

@Javfly33 You options are:

1. Going to countries where they grow the coffee - Ethiopia (the origin), South America, Eastern Asia.

2. Going in your country to a boutique café - unfortunately, usually the coffee that is sold in casual coffeehouses is low quality. Make sure the café roasts relatively freshly picked beans and it doesn't sit for months before being used. 

3. You can make the coffee by yourself at home. You will need to buy freshly roasted beans (usually the boutique cafe sells them), a coffee grinder and a Macchinetta or a Cezve.

Arabica is a species of coffee tree. Brazilian is a region the coffee was grown. African coffees are fruity/floral with high acidity (fruity acidity), South American coffees are sweet and fruity, central American like Brazilian would be more earthy and chocolate. Brazilians are usually cheaper and known more as lower quality, but there are some that are higher quality.

Check out roasters online like black and white, passenger coffee, onyx. They are well regarded specialty coffee roasters. They ship to you or have monthly subscriptions.

If you want the full coffee experience though you need a good grinder. If you use those 50$ ones from Walmart you won't be able to differentiate the flavors your specialty coffee beans can bring out. Automatic will cost more while hand grinders give better quality for the price. Entry level automatic would be baratza encore. Fellow ode is a good mid tier automatic. I'd recommend hand grinders though because a $130 hand grinder is equivalent to like a $200 automatic grinder. For hand grinders I recommend 1zpresso j series to start with, or k series for top of the line. Commandante are also top of the line hand grinders but pricey.

A v60 brewer is one of the best brewers and have tons of recipes you can find on youtube.

Yes i agree. Many people justify their coffee use (sometimes abuse) because it somewhat helps them be more productive. But what i've found is that this is an illusion. I have more energy when i am caffeine free.

Quitting caffeine wasn't so hard for my system. Maybe because i was fasting also. I don't know. But after 3 days of no caffeine i feel back to 'normal'. I had quit caffeine for like 2 weeks. But i got heavily influenced by Dave Asprey and began drinking again. Lol. Now i want to quit again.
