When Does One Get Rid Of Materialistic Assets

10 posts in this topic

Hi guys,

I was wondering does one have to become spiritually enlightened in order to detach from all materialistic objects, or can this be done without enlightenment? And what good will come from this?

@Aamir King An enlightened person will not care about materialistic objects, he will be neither attached nor detached from materialistic objects. It is our greed which makes them so important that we think about possessing or renouncing them. An enlightened master can renounce materialistic objects only to give an example to others, otherwise materialistic objects has little value in comparison with any spiritual achievement.

I believe I also should do this then, as people within my life overvalue materialistic objects, thus meaning that if I do it maybe others will follow in my path. Which will lead to greater amounts of joy from simply living, rather than purchasing and possessing.

They will laugh at your stupidity. In Prophet Mohammad(pbuh)'s era, man was much simple and innocent. Modern man is very cunning and complex, nobody will understand you. Don't copy anybody. Live life in light of your own awareness.

@Prabhaker But, I don't simply just want to be aware I want to live being aware and able to apply the very principles to my own life. If you know something and you don't do it, it will remain as a myth in the eyes of the modern man, which is why I want my life to be as a lesson to others, to have a true purpose.

In modern era , only appropriate lesson to others is , grow spiritually while earning lot of money. It is very difficult task, but modern mind can't understand anything else.

@Prabhaker I'm sure some of the modern minds will understand, and due to this learn a lesson. As well, as those on the path to enlightenment, still attached to materialistic assets, as they will be far more open minded.

@Prabhaker But, even if it isn't for the lesson, it still nevertheless will provide me with more happiness though right? As, I will begin to focus on what's important much more easily e.g. simply being, and living.

Getting rid of material things does not guarantee what you are seeking as there are still countless ways to distract yourself every day and the mind will do anything it can to stop you from the truth as it means death for it. Having material things or achieving success does not get in the way of any internal state of consciousness so don't feel pressured into doing what isn't authentic or natural to you just to meet the "spiritual" status quo. On the other hand its all about what you focus on and the truth is that if your truly dedicated for enlightenment then its not about how your world looks like externally but the burning passion inside for whats real. I hope this helps.
