What Are Some Techniques To Help Check Your Self When You Feel Yourself Self Sabotaging

In any relationship whether it be friendship or a potential partnership? I feel like most individuals put up a guard to protect themselves from being hurt and it is a natural instinct...But its clearly a faulty practice since your motives are to let another person in to get to know them but you're keeping them at arms length to prevent potential harm... Its so simple but I like most other people do this unconsciously and I know it leads to sabotaging your objective which is to let others in...I'm fully aware this sort of self-sabotage can prevent from lessons and personal growth and I have my ways to monitor it. I'm just curious of what others typically do?

Stop caring.
People expect you to be/behave a certain way, even worse, what you are thinking that they are thinking isn't even what they are thinking.
Changing yourself and your behavior based on what you think other people are thinking about you is insane, isn't it?
Using set fault technique to manipulate someone is a other mater, however this should not apply to relationships and friendships, or they will be bound to self destruct.

Awareness is key here. You just have to notice when you're doing it and see that's what's happening. Once you really see it, you usually can stop
