How Can I Shape Myself To Become Who I Want To Be ? (issues With My Level Of Consciousness)

6 posts in this topic

Hello everyone, I would like to ask you a few questions. Ever since I was little I love video games, they have given me hundreds, if not thousand of hours of pleasure. The more conscious I become, the more I realise that video games waste my time in this world, they can give me pleasure and maybe even fulfilment, but what is the point of these feelings, if they arent attached to me doing things in the real world. I could feel great after beating a game... but that feeling is meaningless because I didnt actually acomplish anything, the feeling is thicking my brain into thinking ive achieved something meaningful, when I haven't. Lately I've been thinking and I have been wanting to love psychology and art, I see them as things that I can actually use to help others and improve actual lives... thing is, I LOVE video games and WANT to be a part of them, more than psychology or art... So... how can I change, how can I remove my passion for games and create passions for what I want in life. I want to stop feeling this strong desire constantly pulling me towards watching endless YouTube videos about video games and to actually draw and study.... thing is art and study barely give be enough pleasure for me to want to do them...so Im in a position, where I want to desire specific things and stop feeling a strong desire for other things. It's like all my years of my life I've been absolutely programmed to want specific things that are not healthy, that waste my time and it turns out they give me a lot of pleasure and cant stop. Thank you for reading and commenting.

I would say there are two fundamental principles that will likely help you:

Firstly, accept yourself and the desires you have. Realize there is nothing wrong whatsoever with playing video games or anything else existentially.

Secondly, develop a regular meditation habit. This will help you follow the principle "awareness alone is curative". Be aware when you engage in unwanted behaviours (i.e video games etc.) and get in touch with the shallowness of these activities.

If you do this, you will with effort reach authentic motivation and it will help you  to change once and for all.

@Sharpadox Set bigger goals for yourself. Long term goals. What do you want in a week, a month, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years?
Ever played world of warcraft +12 hours a day, every day, to get level 80 or 90 or whatever it is now? Thats somewhat of a long term goal, it takes lots of time and effort, and half of the way your not even enjoying playing the game, you just desperately want to reach that level. Or grinding something for days just to get that one item.
This seems so effortless because you are constantly thinking about what you are getting when you finally done it, you are focusing on the future. You can do the same with your life.

“THINGS ONLY HAVE THE VALUE THAT WE GIVE THEM.“ - MOLIÈRE
Life is meaningless because we are nothing and dont exist. Thats why we make up the meaning in our life by ourselfs. Humans suffer their freedom. Tell me did you achieve more if you are a millionaire who is depressive because he is still not happy with his life even thought he thought he will be when he is rich or did you achieve more if you are a person who expresses his deepest desires in every moment of his life which makes him happy beyond measure?
Now you still should go out of your way sometimes to make it possible to follow your desires if it implies becoming a millionaire to fullfil your true desieres then do it but if it does not where is the point in being successful?

It's not that you're objectively in love with video games. You play them just because of a habit and the good feeling they give you. They're enjoyable to you because they help you to either relax, escape reality or push off what you truly want to accomplish. Maybe you're scared of putting yourself out there and taking action on your real purpose in life.

There's something good about it as well. The determined and almost obsessive traits you have when playing too many video games is just pure energy. You're simply directing your energy into the wrong channels. If you were to simply stop playing video games, you could make rapid results in your development and achieving your purpose.

Basically, you have to change your habits. A great way to get started is to go on a "video game fast." If you distance yourself from the pleasurable stimulus of games you reset your reward mechanisms. At the moment, you're simply inside the vicious cycle. Take a step back and regain your awareness. This doesn't mean that you have to give up video games completely. Just spend less time playing them and focus on your greater goals. Another awesome tip is to start thinking about your life as an MMORPG. You can apply it to fitness, learning, socializing, meditation etc. Everything you acquire is a level-up. Takes some power of association but it works.
