What is consciousness work?

I recently rewatched a clip of Leo interviewing Peter Ralston and have been contemplating: what is consciousness work?

I'm having some trouble getting to the core of it. I'd be interested to hear different perspectives or insights from anyone willing to help me get on the right track.
