Books/courses on how to read spiritual texts?

4 posts in this topic

I've begun to read some of the classics of Spirituality such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Dhammapada, Tibetan Book of the Dead, etc. So far I have the Eknath Easwaran books.  I'm currently finishing Passage Meditation by Eknath Easwaran, and then The Three Pillars of Zen by Philip Kapleau. After that I'll begin going through the classics themselves. It's more for passive reading in my down time rather than a deep dive into them, but I would like to have a primer on how to actually interpret the texts. If you don't think such a primer would be helpful I'd also love to hear your opinions.

Thank you so much for your help.

You can't go wrong with Eknath Easwaran. I have read his translations and commentary, on both the Bhagavad Gita and the Dhammapada. His insights elucidate the wisdom of the books themselves.

On your question, perhaps the answer is not to read passively, in your downtime, but to Consciously contemplate. I don't know of a primer on how to do this, but can only speak to personal experience. I read a few verses at a time, providing plenty of space around the verses, and let the words simmer with my soul. I highlight what speaks to me, and keep a database of the passages that are most personally significant. It is more of a deep dive than a splash. Quality over quantity. If you feel the words as you read them, and resonate as you read, you will grow spiritually in the process.

Just because God loves you doesn't mean it is going to shape the cosmos to suit you. God loves you so much that it will shape you to suit the cosmos.

Good grasp on epistemology is all you need, externally. Internally, however, there's no other way around spiritual practices. And actually, it's a lot more important than the books themselves.

I would spend 70-80% of whatever time dedicated to spirituality on practice, and 20-30% on theory.

Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it. My main goal is basically just to relax. I already have a dedicated practice and readings that I take detailed notes from. I enjoy reading so I wanted to read something passively that was still higher consciousness. Either way, thanks again.
