Video Games

I'm not a major gamer or anything. But I do play 30 min-1h of video games everyday. Also I do get everything I need to in my life done, and am on a good track. Is it still bad, or do I need to cut video games completely out?

When I think about it I'd tell someone to use that hr of video games for reading or another aspect of actualization work

Have you ever asked why you play video games in the first place? what is it you are really getting from it?

My record is 43 hours during summer time when I was in high school. When it was my last year in high school games became boring to me. I now play chess a lot. And sometimes during exams week I start to play games because of high stress. You don't need to stop playing video games. Take it as a free time activity and you don't need to do anything other than what you want in your free time. If you feel like playing a video game go play. If not don't force yourself for getting some achievements or getting better in game. Play chess for example it's a great game.

Games are still a very controversial thing in my mind ever I've started doing personal development. On the one hand, it's one of my motivations to be more creative and more in the present moment, on the other hand, they take so much time to finish and it's always going to be more worthwhile if you spend that time on self-actualization work instead.

I spend about 3-4 hours of gaming per week. That's not a lot. Video gaming addiction is not a problem I have. My biggest concern is the effects of what types of games you play and how much time you spend on it have on your conscious development. I can say that most video game habits will not raise your conscious awareness. Too many of them are mechanical in nature and expect you to be mechanical as you play it.

Play games only when you feel you are at your most mechanical state. But realize that any time in a mechanical state can be spent working more towards conscious states if you are strong enough.

The better question is...Why are you playing video games? and in particular what type or genre of video games attract you the most ?

No need to create rules for yourself. Just do whatever you feel moved to do! However, if you become neurotic about it (as in, you need it for your happiness instead of playing it because you are happy), then you will suffer and you will know it. At that moment, ask yourself what you're getting out of it. Catch yourself being neurotic about it and understand your neuroticism, and you will naturally play less, as you will see less value in playing.

I used to be a video game addict for a long long time. This past summer I contemplated very deeply why I was so addicted, and the addiction magically fixed itself through my understanding of it. Entertainment's not evil until you need it to be happy. On occasion I'll boot up Minecraft because I love the building and exploring aspects of the game. Play because it's fun, not because you need it. Again, no need to set any rules for yourself. Cheers!

@Scarecrow Fifa 16 I assume, and I play it as well. I tend to play sport games because they mimic real life activity and strategy  along with having a simulation to real life events, very fun indeed. The problem is if you play it out of compulsion. You're bored so you say, I dont have anything to do so i'll play it, meditation is an option. BTW i find myself doing this plenty of times too..

Maybe you can ask @Leo Gura as he was a former video game developer :) He mentioned that in a video on youtube as I can remember.

I'm currently on my way to partake in a psychology study where you get to play video games for 20 minutes ... That's the sneaky way of doing it ?

Personally, I am passionate about soccer, so I find myself buying all soccer related things like jerseys, shoes, playing in real life, and the video game, I don't find anything wrong, but in the meantime while you're playing it, there are things you could alternatively be doing. What I do is I listen to podcasts on personal development or listen to a good audiobook. I have played the franchise for son long, that I really am on autopilot on the game while I concentrate on the audiobook or whatever, its nice because you don't need to pay attention to any plot or timeline

Balance in everything. Nothing wrong with entertaining yourself. On top of that you mention that you get what you've planned to do in line. it is no different from someone taking a break to check their personal email or to go to the bar. It is like hitting the gym; To progress you need rest days in between. Again, balance in everything. As long as priorities and discipline are in check, fear not.

I'd cut video games out 6 days out of the week. Use your time to work hard and grow.

I still enjoy them. I have friends who live far away from me and we have an awesome time laughing and playing League of Legends. I know for a fact that I spend more time doing things in real life. It's also hard for me to stare at my screen for very long. So excessive gaming isn't a problem for me. There are enough positives to keep it as a free time activity.
