MINOR ARCANA CORRESPONDENCES

Minor Arcana Correspondences teaches core tarot suit information in colour coded & easy to read tables. It includes astrology, timing, numerology, counting values & yes no tarot answers.

MINOR ARCANA CORRESPONDENCES

In Major Arcana Correspondences, I talked about the benefits of seeing tarot cards grouped together. This is also true of the minor arcana correspondences. The following tables clearly show sub-groupings, patterns and helpfully raises questions that you will seek the answers for. This self-directed learning is what really helps embed the information in your mind and becomes extremely valuable during live tarot readings, when your powers of recall are tested. Bookmark this page, and the Major Arcana Correspondences page for when you need to access vital information quickly, such as timing and astrology, or for answering a direct yes no question.

As a beginner, learning tarot card meanings can seem daunting but with the help of these tables, you can strip out the thoughts and opinions of tarot authors from websites and books, myself included, and focus on the core information. This way you can build your own tarot vocabulary and lexicon of personal meanings, unique to you.

Some of the information may not make sense to you initially. I generally follow the Golden Dawn correspondences for timing, and these are presented below. Two things that may stand out to you are likely to be the matching timing of the Aces and Pages, and the elemental associations of the court cards. For clarity, I have written about this in Timing Events Using Tarot and Astrology.

TIMING USING THE ACES AND PAGES

In the Golden Dawn system, the aces are the root element of their suit and the Page is the vehicle in which the ace manifests. They really rule a specific area and so timing with either can be ignored. Sometimes the gods, or the Fates, or indeed the Universe does not deem it important for us to know the timing of an event so it makes sense that sometimes it is wise to not seek definitive timing. That said, I have listed the astrological signs associated with the quadrants of the areas that the aces and pages rule together. You can derive timing from these zodiac signs if you wish but equally ignore it. Be mindful that as a quadrant, the time period for each ace or page is three months and so other cards may be required to narrow down the timing of an event.

Learning #tarotcardmeanings can seem daunting but with the help of Minor Arcana Correspondences, you can strip out the thoughts of others & focus on the core information. #learntarotCLICK TO TWEET

THE ELEMENTAL ASSOCIATION OF THE COURT CARDS

Using Qabbalah and the Tree of Life, the Golden Dawn determined very specific elemental associations for the tarot court cards. This is formed through the Tetragrammaton, but is not necessary to further into this system here. A very brief explanation of how the Page of Wands elementally is called earth of fire, or the Queen of Pentacles is called water of earth is to see that that each rank has its own elemental association.

Pages are earth

Knights are air

Queens are water

Kings are fire

Court Cards are the personality types of the Tarot Deck. They symbolize a blending of horoscope signs,

and also a Combination (blending or clashing depending on Dignities) of elements.

Simple Meanings of Courts:

Kings: Yang, Organization, Authority, Control, Practical, Mastery of the Suit

Queens: Yin, Best Expression of Suit, Inner embodiment of Suit, Appreciation

Knights: Action of Suit, can be Unbalanced from one extreme to another

Pages: Manifestation of Suit, Fascination/Play, Learning, Acts out Qualities of Suit

Courts as Horoscope Signs:

Each horoscope sign is divided into Three Decants (10 degrees each) . Each Court Card is the last

Decante of Preceding sign and the 2 Decants of the Main Sign, or 1/3 of the passing sign as it

transitions into 2/3 of the other sign. For example, the King of Wands is Mostly Aries (2/3) with 1/3

Pisces; or he is the First two Decants of Aries and the last Decant of Pisces (the preceding sign).

This attribution allows for a deeper study/meditation on the court cards. For example, for a deeper

meditation on the King of Wands, you can pull out the: 10 of Cups (last decant of Pisces) and the 2 and

3 of Wands (first and second decants of Aries) and study/meditate on these 3 cards together to form

personality types of the Courts

My Personal System is to Use the Cardinal/Fixed/Mutable Qualities to determine Astrological Court

Card Representations.

All Kings are Cardinal, All Queens are Fixed, and all Knights are Mutable.

Court Cards as Elemental Combinations

No element is a Pure Element. It contains mostly itself and a bit of each other Element. It is actually

divisible into 8 Parts (8/8ths). 4/8's are the element, and 4/8's are 1 part of each four elements. So, Fire

is actually: 4/8 Fire, then 1/8 Fire, 1/8 Water, 1/8 Air, and 1/8 Earth (aka 5/8 Fire, 1/8 Water, 1/8 Air and

1/8 Earth). The court cards represent the hidden aspects of the Elements.

Each court is a combination of Elements, as Represented by it's Suit (trump) and Station.

Kings are Fire, Queens are Water, Knights are Air, and Pages are Earth.

The attributions/personality types are as follows (think of how the Dignities of the Elements Combine)

Wands

King: Represents the Fiery part of Fire (Lightning – quick strike)

Impulsive, Proud, Swift Action, unpredictable, lack endurance

Queen: Represents the Watery Part of Fire (Rainbow – refracted image)

Calm, adaptable, persistent, impatient of contradiction

Knight: Represents the Airy Part of Fire (Sunlight – radiant energy)

Romantic, opinionated, boastful, independent, indifferent

Page: Represents the Earthy part of Fire (Smoke – ascending heated particles)

Enthusiasm, Energy, daring, recklessness, forceful, unreliable

Cups

King: Represents the Fiery part of Water (Fountain – rapid welling-forth)

Easy going, sensitive, excitable, no passion

Queen: Represents the Watery part of Water (Pond – calm reflection)
Dreaming, tranquil, mirror to surroundings,
Knight: Represents the Airy part of Water (River – active movement)
Secret, subtle, artistic, inward passions, irresponsible, fickle
Page: Represents the Earthy Part of Water (Ice – frozen forms)
gentle, kindhearted, dreamy, dependent
Swords
King: Represents the Fiery part of Air (Wind – swift pressure)
Established, active, clever, skillful, enthusiastic
Queen: Represents the Watery part of Air (Vibration – movement through matter)
independent, confident, observant, physically graceful
Knight: Represents the Airy part of Air (Cloud – quick changing shapes)
deals w/ideas and symbols, unstable purpose, whims, no real beliefs (one idea = another), no regrets
Page: Represents the Earthy part of Air (Dust – solid residue)
Practical, firm, determined, skillful in material affairs
Pentacles
King: Represents the Fiery part of Earth (Mountain – violent pressure)
Dull, slow, hard-worker, patient, lives for senses/pleasure
Queen: Represents the Watery part of Earth (Field – quiet nurturing)
affectionate, intuitive, sensible, practical, addiction (drugs and alcohol)
Knight: Represents the Airy part of Earth (Plains – steady bearer of life)
competent, enduring, reliable, calm, planning

This is my personal system of assignation of the Major Trumps to the ten Sephiroth. For more traditional systems, the Student is encouraged to research and meditate upon the tree for Herself.

In all my Tarot readings, I view 10 as 0 on another “dimension” of manifestation (either higher or

lower). This is how the system “loops” and is non-linear in fashion; how Energy, Awareness,

Consciousness, all Manifests themselves in different dimensions of Being. It will follow the tree using

cards 0-9, then cards 10-19, then a duality of 20/21, the relationships between the cards should be

apparent (using Rider-Waite Deck). For Minors, you can use 1-10 or 0-9 assignations to study/compare

the planetary influences on the cards.

1 – Kether (“The Crown”): Awareness, Creative Spirit, Unmanifested Potential, the raw material of

consciousness/the raw material of existence (microcosm/macrocosm). Kether differentiates into

Chokma and Binah before achieving phenomenal existence – Abba (the Supernal Father) and Ama (the

Supernal Mother)

Major Arcana Assigned: 0 – The Fool

2 nd Pass: 10 – Wheel of Fortune

2 – Chokma (“Wisdom”): Active Male (Yang) Potency, Intention (needed to grow)

(the Sphere of the Zodiac): first time element appears by itself, uncontaminated by influences,

Primordial Father, Force

Major Arcana Assigned: 1- The Magician

2 nd Pass: 12 - Hanged Man, (Yang Energy to Surrender to the Universe

3 – Binah (“Understanding”): Passive Female (Yin) Potency, Form,

Called “The Superior Mother” (vs Malkuth - “The Inferior Mother”), is two-aspected as Ama – the

Dark Sterile Mother, and Amia the Bright Fertile Mother. Idea is triangulated and produces a “

child” (Holy Trinity 0-1-2), Belief determines Creation(the Sphere of Saturn), primordial mother,

Major Arcana assigned: 2-High-Priestess (Ama) and 3- Empress (Amia).

2 nd Pass: 11 – Justice and 13 – Death (compliments/shadow sides of Ama / Amia)

4 - Chesed (“Mercy”): compassion – can't separate creator and created(Jupiter) solidification,

materialization, caring/kind Rule and Law- giver (wise and Kindly King aspect of God, father of his

people, building up learning/industry).

Major Arcana Assigned: 4- The Emperor

2 nd Pass: 14 – Temperance: unifies Chesed and Geburah by Inner Alchemy, producing VITRIOL

5 – Geburah (“Severity”): Firey Destructive Force, Fear, Warrior-King leading his people into battle,

defending his kingdom, expanding via battle, punishing crime, etc., is an reaction to Chesed, limits

expansion, imposition of order on growth (limiting, restricting, cutting-back) (the Sphere of Mars)

Major Arcana Assigned: 4 – the Emperor*

*The pairs of Sehpira 4 and 5 double in my system, reflecting the Dual-Nature of God of the Old

Testament: Merciful God/Vengeful God

2

nd Pass: 14-Temperance (see above)

6 – Tiphareth (“Beauty”): The Sacrificed Savior, balancing 4-Chesed and 5-Geburah, sacrificed upon

the cross for the Salvation of his People, thereby the mercies of Chesed and the severities of Geburah

unite for the Healing of the People; the Christ-Center, represents Harmony, a workable Universe

(governed by the Sun) Center of whole system, divine energy manifested in Form, represents Element

at its practical Best , radiant light of consciousness

Major Arcana Assigned: The Hierophant (Teacher of Christ's Mysteries, gnosticism, Astral Travel,

sacrifice of “ego-self” to Lead/Teach the people).

2

nd Pass: 15 – Devil (using Vitriol, the Seeker must face/destroy fears, descent of the savior into hell)

7 – Netzach (“Victory”): Success, governed by the 6's (sphere of Venus) degeneration, excess, exposes

weakness of element (too much of it) wild frenzy of passion (emotional creation without critical

judgment)

Major Arcana Assigned: 6- The Lovers (success/victory is achieved by balancing emotion and

judgment, unification of opposites

2

nd Pass: 16 – Tower (what was unified in Arcana 6 is now Separated again, the dual-nature of the

Universe)

8 – Hod (“Splendor”): Intellect, making connections (sphere of Mercury) remedy for 7s, channels

excess into intellectual forms of expression ,

Major Arcana Assigned: 7 – Charioteer (Ego-Triumph, using intellect to make connections)

2

nd Pass: 17 – the Star (guiding hope to the charioteer, higher spiritual aspects vs worldly pursuits)

9 - Yesod (“Foundation”): Emotions, feelings, subconscious creation (sphere of the Moon),

crystallization of elemental energy of Suit before Manifestation, Duality (can be used for good or ill)

Major Arcana Assigned: 8 Strength (Sun/Consciousness conquers Moon/Desire)

2

nd Pass: The Moon (hidden unconscious to now explore vs. fear or master in Strength)

10 - Malkuth (Kingdom): Manifestation, completion and beginning of cycle. (4 Elements), elements

reach fulfillment,

Major Arcana Assigned: 9 – The Hermit, represents Hermeticism as final achievement on Earth Plane,

ready to begin the 2nd Pass

2 nd Pass: 19 – The Sun (Divine Consciousness fills the Hermit's world, the guiding star expands through all creation)

**3rd Pass: Assign 20 – Judgment is in Kether, the Call of the Spirit, the Unimanifest Fire of God, and
21- World is in Malkuth, Combination of All Four Elements, Expression of God, the Yang/Yin Loop

Each Minor Arcana Card has a Specific Title, Called Lord (or Lady). Each Minor card is a Living

Inorganic Being on an energy-Plane (think of a pattern of energy as a specific expression). Each Lord

has both a Male and Female Expression of itself (Yin and Yang). The Natural Expression of that energy

is based on Yang Elements: Fire and Air, and Yin Elements (water and Earth), however, either side of

that Energy Pattern can be manifest when the Card Appears. Each Minor Card also is assigned a

By the numbers

While the suits of the Minor Arcana help show you which area of your life needs attention, exactly what energy is coming your way is determined by the number on the card. The numbers one through ten, plus the court cards, each carry a general energy that can help you better understand the messages of the Minor Arcana:

Aces (1):

Aces represent beginnings. They indicate initiative, drive, potential, and the earliest stages of an endeavor.

Twos (2, II):

Twos carry messages of balance and dichotomy. When a Two arises in your Tarot reading, you cannot move forward until equilibrium is reached.

Threes (3, III):

Threes are about communication and interactions. They indicate the influence that others have over your life, work, and emotions.

Fours (4, IV):

The four cards represent a break or rest period. In order to move forward, you need to stop now and contemplate where you've been, and where you're going.

Fives (5, V):

The fives are cards of adversity. These cards indicate conflict, loss, and other negative experiences in your life that must be overcome.

Sixes (6, VI):

Sixes represent growth -- overcoming challenges, leaving bad situations behind, and gaining a greater understanding of who you are right now.

Sevens (7, VII):

The seven cards teach that you must have faith in yourself and the universe. There are many things happening to you, but confidence, determination, and truth will see you through.

Eights (8, VIII):

Eights are cards of work and change. These cards tell you that the only way to get where you want to be is to change what you're doing right now.

Nines (9, IX):

The nines represent fruition. Things are coming together, and you may or may not like what you see now.

Tens (10, X):

The tens are about final outcomes and the end of a current cycle. They carry messages about the rewards or consequences you'll experience for the amount of work you've put in.

Pages:

The Page cards represent messages and beginnings. The Pages indicate a new phase where you know what you want to do, but not how to do it. These cards tell you to gather all the information you can before you take your next steps.

Knights:

The Knights are all about movement. You know where you're going, and the Knights tell you it's time to set your wheels in motion.

Queens:

The Queen cards are feminine messages of power, potential, and advice. These cards often advise you to seek the help of a wiser, more experienced person.

Kings:

The Kings flex their muscles with authority and power. These cards tell you that you have what it takes to succeed, but you must believe in everything that you are.

In the Tree of Life in the Tarot, each path forms the connecting link between two of the Sephiroth. The King and the Queen are the correlations of the Abba and the Aima in that suit; the Knight or Prince answers to Microprosopus, and the Knave or Princess which was anciently a female figure, is referred to the Bride, Kallah or Malkah.

Combining, then, the material attributions of the Sephiroth and the Path, it results that:

0. Fool =The Crown of Wisdom, the Primum Mobile, acting through the Air on the Zodiac.

1. The Juggler =The Crown of Understanding, the beginning of material production, the Primum Mobile acting through the Philosophic Mercury on Saturn.

2. High Priestess =The Crown of Beauty, the beginning of Sovereignty and Beauty, the Primum Mobile, acting through the Moon on the Sun.

3. Empress =The Wisdom of Understanding, the Union of the powers of Origination and Production; the Sphere of the Zodiac acting through Venus upon Saturn.

4. Emperor =The Wisdom of Sovereignty and Beauty, and the originator of them; the Sphere of the Zodiac acting through Aries upon the Sun, and initiating Spring.

5. Hierophant =The Wisdom and fountain of Mercy, the Sphere of the Zodiac acting through Taurus upon Jupiter.

6. The Lovers =The Understanding of Beauty and Production of Beauty and Sovereignty. Saturn acting through Gemini upon Sol.

7. Chariot = Understanding acting upon Severity. Saturn acting through Cancer upon Mars.

8. Strength = Fortitude. Mercy tempering Severity. The Glory of Strength. Jupiter acting through Leo upon Mars.

9. Hermit =The Mercy of Beauty, the Magnificence of Sovereignty, Jupiter acting through Virgo upon Sol.

10. Wheel of Fortune =The Mercy and Magnificence of Victory. Jupiter acting through Jupiter direct upon Venus.

11. Justice =The Severity of Beauty and Sovereignty. Mars acting through Libra upon Sol.

12. The Hanged Man =The Severity of Splendour. Execution of Judgment. Mars acting through Water

upon Mercury.

Number Card Energies

Each of the Minor Arcana suits contain an Ace card, numbered cards from two through 10, and four Court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. Each of these cards holds an important position within the suit, and these positions have their own potent energies independent of the suits themselves. Here, we will take a look at the numbered cards, including the Ace as the "One" card.

Aces in Tarot

The Ace position holds the boundless energy that exists before creation. It symbolizes the space between cycles, the existence between life and death, the pause between inhale and exhale. An Ace reminds you that your potential is limitless, and where you go next is entirely up to you.

Keywords:

Potential

Opportunity

Change

Twos in Tarot

The second position along the path of the Minor Arcana suits represents our first taste of union. As we move from One to Two, we find partnership and harmony. Twos can symbolize the beauty of relationships, duality and opposition, or even the potential for creation.

Keywords:

Union

Opposites

Harmony

Threes in Tarot

From the Two's potential for creation, comes the Three. Three cards represent development and creativity. They speak to the inevitable realization that we need help if we are to continue to grow. Collaboration, a willingness to delegate, and wisdom in selecting who we will work with are all needed in order to progress forward.

Keywords:

Growth

Completion

Groups

Fours in Tarot

The completion of the Three creates the firm foundation for the work of the Four. Fours represent success and a strong base upon which to build, as well as the melancholy of realizing our work is not yet done. They can also indicate the need to take a period of rest before moving forward again.

Keywords:

Stability

Disappointment

Manifestation

Fives in Tarot

The work of the Fives is to build towards our goals. The early structures here are often unstable and we truly have to fight to keep them upright as forces around us may try to tear them down. Fives represent this struggle and remind us that difficulties are necessary but fleeting.

Keywords:

Conflict

Change

Instability

Sixes in Tarot

After the chaos of the Fives, the Sixes represent the effort to restore balance, a realignment to the whole. They are the bridge between the battles of the past and the potential for the future. The Sixes acknowledge our need to let go and put ourselves back on stable ground.

Keywords:

Harmony

Realignment

Reconciliation

Sevens in Tarot

The Sevens speak to the need to stay in control and apply what we've learned from the trials we endured. Even in the face of hardship, there is a lesson to be gained. Remaining unwavering will allow us to work our way out of the struggle and toward success.

Keywords:

Re-evaluation

Knowledge

Steadfastness

Eights in Tarot

The Eights indicate a time of profound but positive change. Our role in our own work is shifting. We have established systems and foundations that support us. We are nearing mastery, but our work isn't finished yet. We must put forth intentional effort and use any roadblocks as an opportunity to learn a new way of doing things.

Keywords:

Achivement

Change

Advancement

Nines in Tarot

When Nines appear in our readings, we know that the work we have done has grown into something larger than ourselves. We are nearing the completion of this phase, and this is a moment of pause before we do a final push toward the finish line.

Keywords:

Attainment

Transition

Materialization

Tens in Tarot

The Tens indicate the end of a cycle, both physically and spiritually. This is the time between when we move from one phase of our lives to a brand-new one. The journey we went on can deplete us, so it's important to take time for rest before moving forward again.

Keywords:

Culmination

Completion

Rest

Pulling it All Together

The number cards of the Tarot are powerful communicators within a reading. While each of these 10 card positions carry their own energy, the areas of one's life which they pertain to will vary based on the suit in which they appear.

As with any reading, the cards not only speak to us, they speak with one another. Taking care to understand each suit and each card helps us attune to their unique voice and energy. With time, we can learn to hear their collective wisdom loud and clear.

Chaldean Order

If you list these planets in order of their apparent speed as seen from Earth, from slowest to fastest,  you have the Chaldean order of the planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. The Golden Dawn used this system combined with the signs of the zodiac to create their planet-in-sign associations for the Minor Arcana.

Golden Dawn

....Saturn

...Jupiter

.....Mars

.....Sun .

.....Venus

.......Mercury

.......Moon

Threes - Saturn

Fours - Jupiter

Fives - Mars

Sixes - Sun

Sevens - Venus

Eights - Mercury

Nines - Moon

Tens - Earth

Twos don't have a planet because back then planets weren't known like Uranus or Neptune.

Aries - Mars

Taurus - Venus

Gemini - Mercury

Cancer - Moon

Leo - Sun

Virgo - Mercury

Libra - Venus

Scorpio - pluto

Sagittarius - Jupiter

Capricorn - Saturn

Aquarius - uranus

Pisces - neptune

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Aries is ruled by Mars. Mars is the God of War and the planet of action and courage. Aries have a determination and drive that is backed by fire and courage, making you the first to take on a challenge and lead others to victory.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Taurus is ruled by Venus. Venus is the planet of love and money, and for a Taurus those are #1 and #2 on the list of desires to feel stable and inspired. Taurus is a lover of all things pleasurable, soft, luscious, luxurious, and expensive. That’s all Venus talking.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Gemini is ruled by Mercury. Mercury is the planet of communication and Gemini loves to talk and share thoughts, ideas, mysteries, and philosophy. Mercury also rules consciousness, nonverbal communication, and technology.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Cancer is ruled by the moon. The moon is representative of our emotions, the feminine, water, the darkness that lives within us all (dark side of the moon), and of the phases we all naturally go through. Cancers are natural-born feelers who are incredibly in touch with their emotions, which can be very intense at times.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Leo is ruled by the sun. The sun is the center of our galaxy, and Leo loves to be the brilliant and shining center of attention. The sun rules our will, ego, and self-expression, and Leo is a master of all three. With a heavy focus on the self, Leo is the most self-involved sign, but also a selfless giver and passionate lover.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Virgo is ruled by Mercury. While Mercury also rules Gemini, it has a same-same-but-different expression in this earth sign. Virgo is the problem solver, scheduler, logical, and most responsible sign in the zodiac. Mercury is very productive in the sign of Virgo, and the ease of communication is expressed in a very linear way full of reason.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Libra is ruled by Venus. Again, we have another planet share happening here with a completely different expression from Taurus (also ruled by Venus). Libra is an air sign and is deeply committed to balance and partnership. The sensuality of Venus is expressed by Libra through partnership, design, lasting friendships, and charisma.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Scorpio is ruled by Pluto. Pluto represents deep transformation, and has long been associated with the underworld, the subconscious, death, and the afterlife. Scorpio has no fear of emotional depth or the darkness that lives within. In fact, they are most comfortable in these places that others rarely venture to or even acknowledge.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is the archetype of expansion and growth, making Sagittarius lovers of travel, adventure, personal-development, and spontaneity. Luck and good fortune are also associated with Jupiter, and Sagittarius has an infectious positive energy.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. Saturn is the planet of responsibility, hard work, determination, and discipline. While this may not sound like the most exciting collection of adjectives and traits, Capricorn knows how to work hard and play hard. The integrity and lack of illusion in Capricorn is the fingerprint of Saturn.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Aquarius is ruled by Uranus. Uranus is the rebel, the revolutionary, and the planet of originality, innovation, and expanded consciousness. Aquarius has an urge to live against the grain, speak up, get involved in activism, and be a revolutionary thought leader.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Pisces is ruled by Neptune. Neptune is the planet of psychic awareness and the God of the Seas. The watery, psychic, mystic, and magical soul of Pisces is the oldest in the zodiac and representative of dreams, imagination, spirituality, and wonderment. Reality is not so appealing to Pisces as idealism takes the lead.
