Unadulterated Focus

3 posts in this topic

My entire life people have told me i need to work on focus.  What is focus? Does it actually exist?  Seriously im getting tired of hearing this and wish i understand focus.  My focus seems to ebb and flow.  Is this normal?  I am not easily distracted when i enjoy what i am doing.  I don't enjoy movies because a lot of times i have only seen half of it.  I will fall asleep or find something else to do.  Meditation seems thwarted because most of the time it ends in sleep.   Any suggestions?

Focus is just the label we give to concentration of the mind. You can increase your ability to focus. I'd suggest reading a book called Focus by Daniel Goleman and maybe The Shallows by Nicholas Carr. But I really wonder how much of people's inability to focus is because they have some sort of "problem" that needs to be fixed and how much of it is that they're doing things that they have no motivation to be doing.

Maybe your meditation methods are not right for you?

I seriously recommend a sequence of practice, it is potent as hell because meditation is better with preperation.

You can pick up the techniques on the internet.

  1. Ask your Self to reveal itself and for a good mediation.
  2. Couple of deep breaths to "open" the meditation.
  3. Body scan.
  4. Pranayama
  5. Vipassana Witnessing
  6. Offer your actions to life for the sake of life itself.
  7. Close

You only need half an hour to an hour each day.
