What is high quality news? How to consume news?

7 posts in this topic

Hi guys, I’d like to ask these questions from the perspective of someone who is confused about which media to trust. I want to train myself to seek news out with the intention of learning and deciphering what is going on in the world. I also want to avoid the traps of being fed information, even if it is quality information, and being self-misguided that I know everything that is going on around me.

For those of you that have developed your own ways of consuming news, what are the characteristics of “quality” news for you? How do you seek out news? When does news become too much for you? How do you discuss current event with others (assuming you do)? How do you recognize and deal with the tendency to judge what’s going on around you, and to make quick conclusions with the information you are fed?

Interesting question. Do you not trust news media such as CNN?

Hi Value, I actually have a very skeptical inclination towards news in general. It’s probably not healthy tbh, and a bias I haven’t completely overcome and addressed yet. Hence this personal notion I have being of being “trapped” by news. But at the same I do want to become more conscious of what is going on around me. I don’t know where to begin with this.

What is your attitude towards news? Have you ever switched sources based on discovering better ones or have you stuck with certain sources?

No news is good news. :)

I sometimes check up on the failing New York Times as there's some quality journalism there, though be wary of the identity politics bias. You may have a local/community news source also. In my home state, The Age is sort of equivalent to NY Times. BBC can be good for international news. On YouTube, DW (German state media) is great, and do excellent documentaries also. Then there are specialist sources for topics that (IMO) should be much higher priority on mainstream news sources, ie the environment and renewable energy

@sat2493 I almost only watch news when I can't sleep and want to dull my mind out lol. Generally I feel like it is pretty easy to keep up to date on what is going on around the world. I try to determine if the source seem trust-worthy just by intuition, if I start to doubt their credibility I just try to find different perspectives on the same news

News don't exist for the sake of informing you but for the sake of fearmongering, so much so that most people who watch the news nowadays are afraid to breath fresh air. Even before this shitshow, most of what you'd see in news is death and politics. It's a form of entertainment made for dull-witted slaves.

The Conversation is a high quality, relatively neutral Source that does complex news analysis, one that isn't compromised by a Corporate profit motive. It was recommended to me by someone on this forum, and I would also highly recommend it.

AllSides is another useful resource for checking the Biases of various news outlets
