Money Mindset

5 posts in this topic

I am in a position where I live at home and am not financially independent. I intend to find some way to generate cash-flow and earn money, and I would like to ask for advice on the most healthy and effective approach to do so in a focused manner. The purpose is to be able to support a more free lifestyle where I can live on my own premises and travel more often. Specifically, it would be perfect if I could work online remotely while I travel the country.

First, I present one perspective on money:
Money is a social resource whose value is determined by the social consensus. We assign a monetary value to our social exchanges, and thus if we posses $100, we can later withdraw $100 worth of value from society.

This is from 'The Conscious Pursuit of Personal Growth'.

Numerous people talk about how money begins to flow effortlessly once you detach from the need or desire to earn money and begin solely to focus on sharing and providing value for other people. However, this mindset seems to contradict the 'earn money'-attitude and leads to my question:

What is the balance between doing ‘what excites me the most’ and ‘what I believe provides the most value?’
Can I trust or know that those two things are the same?

Seth Godin said that you can have the best product in the world, but if no one wants it, you're out. You need to tailor your work to the demands of others. This means I need to have an idea of what others want before I begin to work.

Do you have any concrete advice for how to begin to earn money through the internet?
My strengths are analytical thinking and big picture understanding. Real competencies are programming and math.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, and thank you for your time.

I'd read Crush it!  by Gary Vaynerchuck for a great intro on these kind of questions.

Essentially, you need to find a passion (sounds like for you programming and math) and run with that. Don't worry about getting the overall specifics right, those things will tend to work themselves out as long as you just keep hammering away at whatever drives you deep down. But generally, you want to start some sort of blog, product and community similar to how Leo did here at Actualized.org and then just keep making it better.

Don't be afraid to change when necessary, but also don't think that just because it's been a year and you're not a millionaire that you'll a failure. That's simply not true, these things take time, and they take more time than most people would admit. That's where the passion comes in. You've got to love what you're doing to push through the times when it seems pointless.

@Blaze35 Don't detach from the desire to earn money (this will make you homeless lol), but instead detach emotionally from money itself. I mean, approach money like you would when playing monopoly. Use money to aquire assets. But don't get emotionally attached to it. Remember... it all goes back in the box anyway. If you want to travel, find a way to turn travel into an asset. Write a travel blog, work for a travelling agency, sell pictures....whatever you can think of.

Yes everytime I obsess about my insecurities of not making enough money or failing to meet my goals or not enough progress, I get discouraged and avoid work. However if I just enjoy things for what they are, I can do so much. Also a very strong mindset you can use is "How can I turn x into money?" x=anything and everything. Their is always a way. Spend some time learning to think of ways to innovate, invent and create methods, ideas never done.

Example: Have extra plastic water bottles? Perhaps smelt them down and create a useful item. Anything can be innovated and made into money.

@Blaze35 If you are seeking to be more financially independent, then you'll probably want to include incorporating living off the grid whether you are living in the city or not to some degree.

I.E. Producing your own electricity/water/food

No bills to pay = heaven

Start up for such a task = hell perhaps depending on the money you currently own HEH

Good luck, and for a peace of mind while on your journey I recommend www.iawaketechnologies.com to help you through your journey of becoming financially independent.
