Cutting Out Bad Habbits

7 posts in this topic

How do you guys feel about cutting habbits that used to be what your life revolves around? For example some people could be into doing drugs and going out at parties or in my case staying home and playing video games. I have a couple of video games that I paid money for but I just can't find a good reason to stop doing self actualization or pursuing my career to do it. It's a bit hard to let go but for those that have been through this challenge, how do you feel about it?

What do you want instead? Why do you want to change habit? You need to ask yourself.

But one thing could be to do more of the things you like. Time is your greatest gift if you want to change.

hi Yukise99,

I used to be extremely addicted to video games while growing up. I was an avid collector and had all the vintage game boxes, magazines, consoles, etc.  I was introverted at the time and would spend the majority of my time playing video games when I wasn't working or at school.  I later on discovered that I was using video games as an emotional crutch because I didn't know how to get along with other people in high school.  I was made fun of and not well liked.  When I got into college, and made a few girly friends, I became extremely outgoing and I no longer was interested in video games anymore.

As long as you have a desire to change that is what's most important. If you are at home in front of a tv screen playing a console, on PC, or on your Iphone the majority of the time... you need to ask yourself why you are doing this?  Start asking questions.  Am I using games as an emotional crutch?  Am I afraid of success?  What is really going on?

From people I have talked to that I know working in the therapy/mental health industry, I can tell you that an addiction between drugs, food and video games is really not much that different from each other.  It's like picking your poison....what do you choose to become addicted to?   What are you using as an emotional crutch...an escape...to deal with stress...to cover up dealing with problems?

A lot of the time the solution to breaking a habit and creating a new one is actually planning things out step by step....a vision....an obtainable goal.  You don't have to completely give up video games if you don't want to.  But if you make dedicated time in your schedule to work on self actualization and pursuing your career it's going to be a lot more obtainable for you.  Think baby steps. Put in your phone or calendar....I will dedicate such and such time (like a few hours a day, or whatever works for you) to work on self actualization or pursuing my career.  And hold yourself accountable to it, or have someone else that will hold you accountable so you can get things done.

Come up with a list of reasons why you want to become self actualized and pursue your career.  List ALL of the reasons, and pick out the ones that resonate and have the most meaning for you.   That will help drive you and keep you motivated.

Also you may want to ponder what your life purpose is. Start asking questions about that too.  I took Leo's life purpose course and I loved it.  It gave me that direction and fulfillment I was looking for.

just be aware of it, notice the problem and don't get mad at yourself. Sit down and reflect on how this problem affects your life and why it's a bad habit. Is it really a bad habit? what is a bad habit? Sometimes "bad habits" are just a lifestyle choice. Maybe instead of seeing them as "bad habits" , you should see it from a different perspective. Realize bad habits are a part of your ego, and that the only reason you see them as "bad habits" is because it doesn't fit in with your idealistic reality. Realize that bad habits are all apart of your ego's unwillingness to listen to itself and control itself;the machine. When your doing the "bad habit" be aware of every action, thought, and gesture that conceives you... why is this a "bad habit" where does this take you, if not done at all.

Thank you man, from one addict to another. This is what I needed to hear.
