Focused Attention Meditation And 22 Other Techniques

7 posts in this topic

I gave up on the nothing-less method of meditation as it was something I did without any success when was suffering with insomnia for over a year. During that time I mastered the nothingness technique of  meditation for hours and hours at a time. A few weeks ago I was talking with a friend about meditation who has also had insomnia , she spoke of how she had mastered the nothing-less technique and like me without benefit.

Think nothing get nothing

It was at that point I switched my meditation to the focused technique for its reported benefits.

To expand on the method I have begun doing sessions where I meditate to visualize a goals successful completion.

Focused attention meditation

Focusing the attention on a single object during the whole meditation session. This object may be the breath, a mantra, visualization, part of the body, external object, etc. As the practitioner advances, his ability to keep the flow of attention in the chosen object gets stronger, and distractions become less common and short-lived. Both the depth and steadiness of his attention are developed.

Examples of these are: Samatha (Buddhist meditation), some forms of Zazen, Loving Kindness Meditation, Chakra Meditation, Kundalini Meditation, Sound Meditation, Mantra Meditation, Pranayama, some forms of Qigong, and many others

@Beam Are you talking about the "Do Nothing" technique? It is a great technique and with time can take you all the way to Classical Enlightenment. But stick with what works better with you.

I am not a traditional enlightenment seeking human , I want more from life much more so be forewarned this will challenge your beliefs , I mean no disrespect I want to share my opinion as different from yours as it may be :/

Classic Asian enlightenment is not what I desire , I want more then finding the absolute least of it , talk about boring and seriously ignorant. I think is a scam put over on ignorant people by ignorant people. , I mean listen to the claim all is nothing - what a scam ..

I find absolutely no joy in the realization that nothing matters nothing is important and everything an illusion ,  I seriously desire more from my teachings and teacher , what a cop out the no stance stance.

Instead I want to be all I can have all I desire a healthy relationship a custom home a business that makes a difference in others lives.

Having tried the think nothing technique extensively it did lead to a awareness of thoughts but it also predisposed me to not thinking at all or thinking of nothing. For me it was not very illuminating but did provide mindfulness.

But
Mindfulness is how you treat others. How does one learn to treat himself if he is training to be mindful of others ?  I abandoned the method after realizing that fact and stated working on myself  as the saying goes Heal thy self before others. First i need to get on my feet being as considerate or mindful to others as I currently know how

I have Tinnitus. It doesn't bother my meditation because during meditation I am completely unaware of it. It's so strange. Other times of day it bothers me a lot. If you were to hear my Tinnitus as I do, you would think it was a real problem for meditation, but I decided if it ever did bother me, it's something I could actually focus on (like your object) but thus far I haven't had to do that.

What a relief to be free of tinnitus while meditating  , your story makes me curious if with time and practice you could rid yourself of it permanently with longer multi hour sessions.

The premise that anything is possible comes to mind
