Puerto Rico needs statehood

20 posts in this topic

There are over three million Americans who pay federal taxes but do not have proper representation in congress. Almost half of Americans are not even aware Puerto Ricans are US citizens. This is a travesty! They must be given statehood, senators, and representation in the house. America is too developed of a country to be this negligent of its populace!

Why in the world?

I don't think Puerto Ricans need statehood no matter whether they pay taxes or not. That doesn't look democratic to me.

It's almost like Trumpers saying they want a different state.

It's United States of America. Not Divided Statehoods of different hoods.

@Preety_India The majority of the vote favored statehood. AKA becoming the 51st state of the United States.

That's the craziest shit ever.

There are blacks in the US living for centuries. Indians and Chinese live in the US. They have never asked for statehood!

Why should Puerto Ricans want a different state? If they are American citizens legally, then they're technically like other American citizens. Right there they lose their ethnic differences.

They should treat themselves like any other American citizen what's up with this divisive tactic?

Far be it from me to defend the dastardly imperialist Onecirrus but they're talking about the residents of the island, not about people of Puerto Rican ancestry living on the mainland. The alternative to statehood is independence.

@Preety_India I think there is a culture barrier between us because I have no idea what you are talking about!? The US territory of Puerto Rico wants to join the United states of America as the 51st state, this has nothing to do with destroying their ethnicity or culture.

OK I got you now. You're saying that Puerto Rico should become a US incorporated territory right?

I took it as something else lol.

Why do you think the US government is not accepting Puerto Rico as a US territory?

America went through this horrible phase of conquering territories and claiming them as American soil. Look at Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, and American Virgin Islands. Hawaii is now a state, so why not the rest? Along with Puerto Rico and D.C.

@Preety_India Racism

Then why does America accept Hawaii, Samoa and other smaller island territories?

@Willie I think DC deserves statehood as well, Puerto Rico has just been grossly neglected for too long. As for the others, I think they should be allowed to decide democratically if they wish to remain territories or seek independence.

@Onecirrus why not seek independence, isn't that a better option?

@Preety_India No, Samoa is not a state. America made Hawaii a state because many whites moved there. I am pro independence but in the case of Puerto Rico, they wish to become a state like Maryland, Virginia, California, Florida, etc. These are states, not territories. They have representation in the federal government.

@Onecirrus I see

Such racist politics will continue. Within America itself there is so much division and chaos ethnicity-wise.

@Preety_India Yes, it is a big problem holding us back. Growing up, I didn't know there was so much racism in America's institutions and politics. But now as an adult black male, it appears ubiquitous in America. I can't believe how much of this country is not even at stage orange yet.

Ya know, Joe Biden will have a lot of work ahead of him as president. Republicans may still have a majority in the Senate (best Democrats can hope for is an even split), and the Supreme Court is still conservative. However...

If any of the above territories of the U.S. attain statehood within the next 4 years, that means 2 more senators each time. What are the odds of any of them having Republican senators?

Sadly I think this is an 'out of sight, out of mind' issue for many Americans. Until more attention is brought to this issue, and Puerto Rico becomes a spotlight of national attention, I don't see this obvious injustice changing.
