Carb-protein-fat ratio

9 posts in this topic

I've seen several times this ratio.

Is there an optimal ratio for health? What ratios are unhealthy and why?

How can I choose the right ratio?

No ratio. Focus on quality foods.

Just eat enough protein and enough fat, then you can shuffle your calories in whatever direction you like and it won't matter that much. I'd advise focusing more on micro stuff after this

@Superfluo You'll get 80% of results by eating whole foods but if you wanna optimize your health and feel really good then the ratio does matter.

You generally wanna eat 0.4-0.7 grams of protein per pound, depending on your age and how active you are.

The optimal carb:fat ratio for you will mostly depend on your genes. You can get your genes tested from something like 23andme or just try both highcarb and highfat and notice which one you feel better on.

Cool. I'll focus on diet first, thanks.

@Superfluo  There are ratios compared to your genetic predisposition to metabolise fats or carbs.

In short the more equatorial your ancestory, the more carb heavy you might eat, the more polar, the more fat heavy.

One thing: Carbs and protein are highly acidic, you should balance it our with alkaline foods.

Why?

no woowoo, your body will pull calcium out of your bones to stabilize your blood pH. Also, cancer grows in acidic environments.

From my experience ratios definitely can have a significant affect on energy levels and general state of being.

This ratio is usually represented as a percentage of calories from each macronutrient. Carbs (%) / Fat (%) / Protein (%)

Diets high in fat make me feel slightly more sedentary and heavy, they also slow down my digestion. Fat is twice as calorically dense at carbs or protein by weight so the percentage can become a lot quite easily

Carbs are ideal and should make the majority of your ratio in my opinion, gives me more energy and mental clairty.

This is all with respect to a plant based whole food diet.

80/10/10 (C/F/P) is generally considered a good ratio to aim for, Doug graham has a very interesting book where he recommends this ratio.
