Going On My First Meditation Retreat

in one month i'll be going on this retreat and i had an idea. i feel like it would be a good idea to do strong determination sitting along with the do nothing technique so that when i start the retreat my monkey mind would be a little more tired from the do nothing and i'll be able to adapt better to the long periods of sitting still since i've already been doing strong determination sitting. 

should i be putting these techniques at the forefront of my meditation habit up until the retreat? 

also what should i be expecting to feel like during and after the retreat? i know i probably shouldn't have expectations but i'm just curious to hear the experiences of the actualizers who've been on a vipassana retreat.
