Change Does Not Exist

3 posts in this topic

I was contemplating in the shower and I started thinking how we, people, are always constantly chasing change. And I took a step back from that and thought to myself... But what is change? Going deeper into this contemplation I realised change DOES not exist. But it does. It is an idea, a fiction that we apply to something through contrast or when pertaining to an individual through hindsight. Think about it.. You cannot ever experience change, like you cannot see evolution. However everything still continues to evolve regardless. I guess where I am heading at this is, in this contemplation I realised the irony and delusion of chasing change. It is embedded in the fallacy of believing we can ever see change. In actuality, what actually occurs is a process by which we exert ourselves towards, and through persistence and the right circumstances forcing us to adapt do we begin to mold to better deal with those circumstances. However, we will never directly control or experience our adaptations. All we really can control is our efforts. Kinda like a boat heading down a river that splits off into two, are you going to use your paddle to push yourself to the left side or the right? The pull is inevitable. Likewise I feel like we make these choices in our own life when we're faced with decisions throughout our day to day habits.

Do we want to move to growth or comfort? Adaptation is inevitable..

It takes adaptation of others ideas to move from dysfunction to functional but the rubber doesn't hit the pavement until a change incurs in ones life.

It starts in the mind and ends up in your hand

Interesting because I would argue that permanence doesn't exist, therefore change is inevitable and unstoppable.

We may not be able to witness change, especially as it can take a long time, but ultimately everything is changing all the time. Not so much as an atom remains constant - afterall, everything in space is moving therefore there is a change in position occuring constantly. But everything ultimately changes. Nothing lasts. Relationships don't last. Life doesn't last. Material opbjects or matter changes over time. The sun won't last. The universe won't stay as it is. The house you are sitting in won't be there forever. Your brain patterns change from one moment to the next. In fact you change on a moment by moment basis.

But, another way to look at it is this: since the present moment is the only moment we have that is real, and it is only a snapshot in time, then change cannot be perceived because in the present moment there is no change. 'Change' can only be perceived by reference to memory of the state something was previously. So technically you're right. Change can't be seen because it relies on memory, which is not real.

Do people spend their lives chasing change? I'd say that many people spend their lives trying to maintain things from changing. Many people are afraid of change. Afraid of that which is different. It's the resistance to change that people often suffer from.

Most people are chasing comfort. Comfort dressed up as growth. You're right, adaption is growth really. Accepting what is and going with the flow, working with it, not against it.
