United Nations (UN) and it's monopoly.

11 posts in this topic

I don't know how many of you follow the operations of United Nations which is an International Governmental Organization, closely

But I crave perspective on this topic, because in my opinion they are still working with a decades older system which demands a change or upgradation, as the political order in the world becomes more multi-polar I'm afraid I don't see their system lasting for long, it's the monopoly of only 5 most developing nations ( P5 members) I have the most issue with, it's only these 5 countries who are playing bigger and bigger roles in shaping International affairs, those are the gone days when this organization was founded after WW2 in 1945 and the world was bipolar more or less, when the organization was founded, and it were these 5 countries namely:

China, France, Russia, UK and US

these countries were either the victors or their allies during WW2 and thus were made permanent members ( P5 ) when the UN was formed.

Even during the Global Crisis as the current COVID-19 pandemic I don't see much crucial decisions coming out this organization, when there's is a need for such an International Organization to come out and Unite all nations leaving all differences behind no matter what either political or geographical.

What is up with them dudes, I mean less developed countries are crying out loud, but that's what their birth right is ? Is it so ?

What's ur take? if anybody's willing to discuss this.

There's more to the UN the the security council and of course there are the non-permanent members. Permanent membership is more of a privilege than a monopoly, and is obviously outdated as you say. But there is more to it than history, namely that the US, Russia, France and China are nuclear and space powers. From that pragmatic perspective, the UK should be replaced with India. But really, the main political issue is the role of the general assembly rather than the composition of the security council.

The UN isn't a federation so can't do much specifically in response to things like the pandemic and isn't supposed to. UN agencies do of course help people who can't help themselves but that's not what you're talking about I think and is work which could in principle be carried out outside of the UN even though it makes sense to do it within the framework of the most inclusive intergovernmental forum on Earth.

Yea the UN is largely responsible for the lack of inaction. It's like it doesn't exist anymore. The US left the UN at some point. The UN is not a very strong organization in international affairs.. I hardly ever hear about it.

Now and then some person from the UN will make an announcement and then disappear.

When they hold meetings most leaders end up fighting and not much gets done.

I wish it had more power, direct power over countries.. Especially to stop terrorism, population control, poverty, religious wars, inter-country conflicts, corrupt and Stage blue bureaucratic regimes,, fascist governments.

How can the UN have power when every state wants to be nationalistic and selfish?

The world is too unconscious for the UN to be effective. It's a marriage between children.

@commie I'm talking about all the functions, organs and bodies of UN in general.

I mean role of UNGA and UNSC go hand in hand, isn't it ?

ROLE OF UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY (193 member nations) :

It serves as the main deliberative, policy-making, and representative organ of the UN. It is responsible for the UN budget, appointing the non-permanent members to the Security Council, appointing the Secretary-General of the United Nations, receiving reports from other parts of the UN system, and making recommendations through resolutions. It also establishes numerous subsidiary organs to advance or assist in its broad mandate. The UNGA is the only UN organ wherein all member states have equal representation.

ROLE OF UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL ( 15 members,5P AND 10NP):

It is charged with ensuring international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter. It's powers include establishing peacekeeping operations, enacting international sanctions, and authorizing military action. The UNSC is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions on member states.

(source:wiki)

Now highlighting, how important these two organs of the UN are I would like to put forth the issues that I have or which I see broadly, in UNGA it seems like member states in every session spill out the same thing over and over again some even lending the blames on their neighbouring nations for their vested interests and probably because they think it's not worthwhile to really bring out something new because none of those nations are developed enough to do that.

All in all I'd say I'm done with the rhetoric used in these sessions and the utopic ideals they talk about even sometimes they go as far as giving references from Philosophy, which I strongly doubt.

UNSC has a very significant role to play worldwide I don't like the idea of permanent and non permanent members in today's age, permanent members have the privilege of VETO power, so they use that privilege as it suits them. More nations must be involved in decision making, isn't it ? It is this monopoly I was trying to point out.

I don't know about that still my understanding about UN is way too sloppy. But there's is World Federation Of United Nations, what is that and what is it's role ?

Direct power is questionable in my opinion but they can do as much as to guide and show the way, given the different demographics and psychological development of humans in different parts of the World.

much as to guide and show the way,

That hasn't worked wonders in the past decades.

That's why they need direct power.

The lame method doesn't work with fascist stubborn governments.

A whip is needed.

The veto simply reflects the fact that if the USA, Russia, France or China are in principle powerful enough to torpedo any decision. Likewise the others aren't going to stop any ignominy if one of them backs it all the way. The UK hardly belongs in that club anymore but I don't think keeping it in is such an exorbitant privilege.

Are you simply talking about the federation of NGOs? That's of course nothing like a world government. A federation would be something like the EU, but with global membership. And while the EU could have done better, it did act effectively in response to the pandemic.

Yes, that is true.

Yes Indeed the world is too Unconscious, but maybe if UN brings change into the structure of how it functions world-wide, it can be effective even if not 100% but atleast upto some extent. Yes, it's a marriage between children but, who is there to tell children that they shouldn't marry and take responsibility for any such mishappening ?

Salutations,

> United Nations (UN) and it's monopoly.

It's socio-toxic too, by design, while successive generations continue to pay the price.  UN never learns in good time from its own past mistakes, still can't manage to reach an absolute consensus on death penalty which can't get any more absolute than that, etc...

Good day, have fun!!  B|
