Yellow perspective on socialism

17 posts in this topic

Anyone know of a stage Yellow critique or analysis of socialism as a political model for the US? By “socialism” I mean social democracy. Is Scandinavian-style socialism the inevitable next step for America (assuming all hell doesn’t break loose in November and we keep evolving as a nation)?

Not even sure that counts as socialism

It doesn't, it's social democracy.

That's my biggest critique calling social democracy socialism or democratic socialism automatically turns off a lot of people.

@Husseinisdoingfine Can I just ask, if you think Social Democracy wouldn't work, why would Socialism?

I personally think Leo's SD political model is a lot more accurate-

@Opo I agree, but unfortunately due to Bernie's most fervent supporters and to some extent Bernie himself, socialism is the term that's been pinned to Social Democracy. Hopefully they can rebrand for the next election cycle, but I doubt it. Certainly conservatives will continue to call it socialism.

So guess I have two questions:

-Yellow perspective on Social Democracy

-Yellow perspective on Socialism

@Husseinisdoingfine how would socialism help with automation?

Seems to me like the robots would replace the workers and it would be the same as capitalism.

In the Social Democracy those robots would be massively taxed. To me that seems like a good solution.

@Haumea2018 I feel like you'll be able to contribute a lot of good points here, you really helped me understand this.

I think Social Democracy  (Scandinavian style Socialism as you say, please use the proper terminology) is an inevitable step for the U.S., and at the same time I don't think that it's a sustainable system due to globalized outsourcing, automation, and the sheer size of the U.S. Even the Scandinavian countries are going through austerity (cutting welfare funds) at this point of the worlds globalization, will their system last much longer as the world becomes more globalized?

It's for these reasons I'm personally under the conviction that Socialism (Not social democracy) in inevitable.

@Husseinisdoingfine What are the broad strokes changes that would move Scandinavian countries from Social Democracy system to Socialism? How would the government and society restructure to become truly Socialist?

@Husseinisdoingfine would that “form of socialism” not simply be a hybrid of socialism & capitalism?

Lol, tell that to people paying the tax on every 10$ pack of cigarettes.

I don't understand what you mean. Could you explain more?

Unrelated but it reminded me of solution for cigarettes.

Increase the price by 100%.

That was able to stop kids from starting and long-term that will be a huge benefit to the society.

You can't stop technological progress by just taxing it, and even if you could you would be holding back progress instead of putting it to good use

Why I want to stop progress?

it's because you want to stop the development of technology which can be used to ease the work load

How?

Taxes?

Are you making an argument for a free market?

I’m curious where Resource Based Economies is on the spiral. It’s gotta be Tier 2.

@Forestluv I'd say it's a Turquoise model, but due to existential forces maybe Yellow societies will begin implementing it, at least at the local level and then growing in scale from there. Just a theory :)

Yellow Corporations would try to monopolize talent and patents.  Omega Corporations are a big problem here.

Especially because everyone voted (in the corporation) for the corporation to gain that much power.

What's the difference between capitalist-socialist hybrid and social-democratic?

I feel like I'm missing something because I always thought social-democratic was capitalism with socialist elements balancing it out.

What do you mean by that?

@Loving Radiance Climate change, collapse of economies, potentially collapse of all of western society, ever-increasing polarization leading to civil war, etc. Not saying any of this is guaranteed to happen in our lifetimes, but historically speaking it wouldn't come as a surprise given the way things are trending.
