Elon Musk on Consciousness

12 posts in this topic

Yeah he is getting confused with brain activity with conciseness, what he should say is if you damage your brain it interferes with the activity of the brain. Do you have a brain in a dream? no but you have consciousness of the experience of the dream without the need of a brain.  When you actually find out what consciousness is it will leave you baffled as to how clueless these rational scientist are and the fact there opinion is so highly regarded. then again if the game was well known would it be so fun playing it? prob not

Elon musk dose some great stuff btw not hating on him but he is clueless in this area ?

Consciousness is not a physical phenomenon, there are a chain of events that create the conscious experience. It's not a single isolated event that occurs by accident. When you treat a disease, you need to focus on the cause, not on the effect.

Damage to the brain does not imply "damage" to consciousness. He confuses perception with consciousness.

Of course, perception is held within consciousness, but consciousness is not perception

A counter argument could be: you could damage your perception organs and thereby "damage consciousness" (according to his logic), like for example if you were born blind, you wouldn't see anything at all (nothing, not even blackness), or if I would damage your visual cortex (or the whole occipital lobe), you would also not be able to see anything at all any more (again: not even blackness, because blackness is a visual perception).

If you were born blind, your occipital lobe and your visual cortex might be perfectly fine - but your eyes might not function. Same result, it's just a change in perception (which occurs within consciousness), not in consciousness itself.

Consciousness is not an epiphenomenon which has "physical, material reality" as its origin - "physical reality" is just an idea which is also occurring within consciousness.

At least admit that, Elon!xD

The brain is in consciousness. Consciousness is not in the brain.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

You damage your brain in a dream and you damage your dream-conciousness, which implies the dream is taking place in the brain of the dream character who got hurt... 9_9 9_9 9_9

Same logic.

Haha yeah well he is surrounded by materialism like 90% of the people are, and it is a reason for that, to keep the dream running,  cause if everybody understod that consciousness is all there is and you cannot die it may create problems but then again it could liberate alot of suffering to

Depends what musk meant. I assume he was talking about the dictionary/mundane definition of consciousness.

We must realise 99% of the world mean something completely different when they talk about consciousness. They are not wrong, we just use the same English word and gave it an entirely different meaning. We should have invented a new word, we are the dumb ones...

Are you conscious of the nature of consciousness?

I think he means what we might call awareness.

Well, even then he'll assume that the brain and consciousness are separate 'objects'.
