Any Writers/artists/directors/entertainers/story-tellers?

32 posts in this topic

I want to know if there are anyone here who’s life purpose is to create entertainment. Such as writers, game designers, poets, artists, etc.

I saw two of Leo’s videos “Society fucks you in the ass” and “Why you must stop watching TV” he seems to generally say that entertainment is a low consciousness activity, that it is just for our chimp brain.

But I know I’ve personally experienced many stories that moved me emotionally, that made me want to seek higher things in life, hell some of these were anime that had some stupid comedy in them, but the ending was just heart shattering, and all I wanted to do after watching that was go outside and do nothing, and just be, and also let out those emotions.

I think one of the beauties of certain stories is that when you start watching it, it appeals to your chimp brain, like everything else, but then once it hooks you like that, it wakes you up. The being awake form it doesn’t last very long, but the inspiration is then there.

If there are other entertainers, creators of stories of any kind, and artists, I would like to know. I would like to communicate with you all. I feel that being an entertainer, and also engaging in it could stunt our growth if engaged improperly so to speak. I want to be aware of the pitfalls, I want to hear about other people’s pitfalls.

I'm a creative writer and I tell stories because i genuinely love storytelling. I watch TV shows and movies and theater to feed my muse!

I've been looking to get into game development for awhile now. I'm a programmer by trade, so if there are any artists or designers out there who want to collaborate, hit me up ;). Creating in-depth storylines and thematic aesthetics is not my specialty but just as important for creating an immersive game environment.

Awesome! :D thank you both for responding. I'm actually not around much creators.

@Zane I'm a creative writer as well :) I too watch T.V. shows, movies, read manga, etc to feed my muse.

@-nbolt- Ooh, my friend is also a programmer. We're going to work on a video game soon (and may more. We had ideas for video games, and making a video game company since we were children).

@Chew211 Hello there and welcome. I write a lot, at the moment I write in my blog where I talk about my life in general and my adventure in minimalism and mindfulness. I also publish small pieces of poetry, at the expense of sounding irrelevant :D I am also writing a novel, which is inspired by magical realism.

I found that lots of ideas from Leo and people on this site are very inspiring! I could take any word used and play with it. I find it very refreshing. Although I know when I start to work in September I won't find as much time for my writing, I am trying to enjoy the moment :)

@Pelin Awesome to hear! :D I hope you get to work on your writing despite work, I always find that it is indeed possible to carve out time for writing. Feel free to pm your blog and poems if you'd like, I'd like to see it.

I wonder if it would be alright to post links to our stuff here, or if it would be better to PM that sort of stuff...

No offense but anyone who creates a video with a story and some humor and that creates a change in someone is a writer, an artist, a director, an entertainer, and a storyteller.

The "How" doesn't matter, only the "Why" does. Anyone can use porn responsibly, just do it responsibly.

Art can be created with incredible depth. The type of art that "fucks you in the ass" is not really art but a low consciousness stimulation package.

People take it way too lightly. Almost any guy at 30 and on welfare after having read a fantasy book is gonna be like oh yeah nobel prize let's go, while they have absolutely nothing to even concieve what art is.

Society is to blame for this, because it throwing the whole "be creative" everywhere so much that it doesn't mean anything.

It's absolutely not anyone can access and shouldn't be able to. The depth is the same as enlightement and involves creating pieces to move the world forward from a spiritual stand point. One can only be chose by god for this task, while the ego chooses itself believing in it's false greatness.

For instance if you lack the necessary background you may not even be able to read a book the way it was intended because you cannot see the depth in it.

Of course there is art that doesn't fuck you in the ass. But it's hard to find and even harder to create.

PS: I am a writer and I am a poet are HUGE ego feeding machines - The ego can provide a million of reasons to feel more special and the cancerous uneducated "I'm a poet " community is one of them !

@Lynnel I'd what makes the real difference is the manner in which one approaches ANYTHING that makes it "fuck you in the ass" or not. I don't know enough to say there for sure ARE and AREN'T people who can be writers, though I have met a few writers who aren't doing it with much thought, who haven't looked within themselves and realize weather or not they actually want to do it.

However, if there is an authentic drive to create, then one ALWAYS has the potential to create.

I do agree, but authenticity isn't something easy to achieve in all honesty :)

Perhaps that's just a limited belief we have ;)

It's not that it's easy or hard, I think, perhaps it's more we have been conditioned to suppress our authentic selves, and we have to be aware of that and take effort to re-condition ourselves, by being both critical and accepting of ourselves (paradox, but that's what we work with). For some people it will be difficult and for some it will be hard, it depends on their paradigm, and how they are changing their paradigm (moving towards dissolving it, of course).

@Chew211  I uninstalled all my games, cancelled TV subscription, cancelled Netflix, and stopped watching things on Amazon video. I also listen to audio books instead of music in the car.

The funny thing is that I think my purpose in life probably has to do with making music and some other things in a creative way. I also like doing 3D videogame art and I might even pursue it as a near term career. I don't think everyone has to cut those things out, just the useless things. Watching Vikings on Amazon is awesome, but it doesn't take me closer to any of my goals. If my goal was to make a cool 3D model + texture of a viking character, I'd probably watch Vikings.

I'm an artist and musician. I paint and draw, do printmaking, play guitar and cello. I don't see art as just being entertainment though. I think art should do more than just entertain. T.V, porn, drinking etc are entertaining but they aren't art are they? And equally art isn't always entertaining. Art can easily be disturbing and even ugly. So I think the point of art is to have some kind of emotional or intellectual or philosophical effect on you while at the same time being entertaining to at least some extent.

It varies from art form to art form though and it doesn't necessarily have to have much effect on you or provoke you in order to be considered art. However, it is my opinion that it is better art if it does do so.

In terms of what you said about stunting growth I would say that it's possible to sort of loose yourself in art and use it as a distraction from improving your live. Sometimes people use creativity as a way of escaping their problems by just diving into whatever creative endeavour they are involved in and therefore not really dealing with the issues they have. However, you could say the same of a lot of other things too such as business (even more so than art), relationships, work, etc. I think it's more of a problem with human nature than with art.

I think the "fuck you in the ass" stuff is obviously, the "fuck you in the ass"- total chimp brain-o-ramma-thon-crap...(like reality TV, etc)....Leo/ (we all) love books (mostly non-fiction) but many important teachings come in the forms of stories, and I've heard Leo etc use this "story-style" to get across important points....they are awesome...regardless of the medium, I think it's about knowledge gained...rather than mind rotted...lol....As a creative person, that has experience in a number of related mediums, I also feel a strong desire to share wisdom in this way...I think discerning what is a distraction and what is a learning tool can become a blurred line when it comes to television in particular, and the addiction potential is strong! I have recently had a distraction relapse myself (stress-avoidance)...That said, I think visual forms have a lot of power as a tool for spreading insight....beautiful potential for sure!

By the way, Leo's absolutely contributing to the chimp game with his youtube videos. He's stroking the egos of the majority of his audience.

I remember my first 9 months of "personal development", all I was really doing was watching tons and tons of his videos over and over again just to make me feel good. It helped me get out of depression, craft an amazing vision for my life and take responsibility, but, still, it was extremely egotistical.

I wouldn't say that's a problem with his videos but a problem with you or whoever feeds their ego with them. Anyway, as you say it still improved your life so it's all good :) Although the way it's framed as "personal development" and "self improvement" does makes it more susceptible to ego stroking. Remember he does also attack your ego in the videos too. Sometimes quite violently.

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to experience a "conscious" children's storyteller that had the magnificent ability to do things like: transform materialistic thinking to self-love and deep gratitude through hero's journey's. A wonderful example of the positive power of value based stories. That said, I have also been doing research on the storytelling methods that corporations use to tap into our emotions and manipulate our subconscious into materialism. So, back to my previous post, I still feel the same way. The content, purpose and message of the story is the most important. Flickering images, television, ads, etc have great potential to harm... or heal, to manipulate... or educate! Using awareness in the stories we absorb, and the stories we tell, appears to be the crucial key!

It is true, entertainment is for our chimp brains. However there is a bridge between our chimp brain and our higher self, which is our heart. The heart is the crossroad: it can search for lower and higher satisfactions both. From our heart we express art, so there is also higher arts, medium arts and lower arts...
An example of lower arts, which is the great majority of arts, are love songs; entertainment is lower art. An example of medium art are Van Gogh's paintings, which allow you to meet the person who created them. An example of higher arts are Jesus' words, which are existential... But there are many degrees, not just three. It all depends on the level of the feeling that's being expressed.
Apart from what one has been trying to express and communicate, which can be low or high, there is also the ability of technically and creatively do art, which is the extent of how much and how well the feeling has been expressed. This is independent from what level of art is being done.
It is good to know that higher arts are more precious but not more important than lower arts. Good art is art done good, whether is high or low.
I have to say that the art to which society is, as mainstream, attracted nowadays is low and bad art both... I think, not very much the level, but the goodness of art in previous times was better. I think that it's due to the fact that now everybody can do art while before only rich and cultured people could. But I have nothing against this situation anyway.
The power of art is that it can inspire you, lower as well higher arts can. It depends on what you get inspired with. Being inspired doesn't mean to be awake.
