200 capsules of multivitamin?

3 posts in this topic

Hi, I've recently finished reading UltraMind Solution by Mark Hyman.

There he recommends taking a multivitamin with minerals to be in an optimal vitamin range. So I bought one and checked the doses of vitamins and minerals. And I have some questions.

In the book Hyman lists all the nutrients and their dosages needed in a good multivitaminic.

For example:

  • 100-500 mg of pantothenic acid (B5)
  • 500-1000 µg (mcg) of vitamin B12
  • etc.

So I looked on my multivitamin and it says:

  • 5 mg of pantothenic acid = 83% RDA*
  • 2,5 µg (mcg) of vitamin B12 = 100% RDA*
  • etc.

*I double-checked RDA values from https://ods.od.nih.gov and RDA set by my country (in Europe) and they match.

Now, I know in the book Hyman tells you to increase the vitamin intake with multivitamin, but with the data given I should take 20 capsules of multivitamin daily to arrive at 100 mg of B5, 200 daily to arrive at 500 µg (mcg) of B12.

Am I missing something? Really, 200 capsules? I know he recommends additional supplements other than the multivitamin, but still! Obviously I can buy a better one, but isn't it too much given that I'm already near the RDA level?

Also, I checked the UL (Tolerable Upper Intake Level) of vitamin B3 from here: https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Niacin-HealthProfessional/ (don't know if this link is reliable, but it's governative so I thought it might be).

It says 35 mg. And Hyman recommends a multivitamin with at least 50 mg of vitamin B3.

Isn't it dangerous?

B-Vitamins mostly aren't dangerous as they are water-soluble and you'll pee any excess out. Niacin (B3) can make you a bit flushy in the face and turn your pee into golden rain (literally) but otherwise they are safe although I don't know about long-term. Not sure if we have data on such gigantic doses of Bs taken over years.
What is Mark's reasoning for you requiring these doses? Is he recommending you buy something of his brand?

@Michael569

Mhm no, that's the basic nutritional support for the brain, he writes. A basic multivitamin to be in optimal vitamin range.

He writes that you may have to take more capsules a day, but still, comparing those doses with those of a basic multivitamin and mineral from the supermarket, they seem too high.
