How do you protect your house from a wildfire?

18 posts in this topic

There is a giant fire brewing over here in oregon. The fire is about 20 miles away from my house. I was wondering if any of yall on here know of any ways to prevent a house from burning because of a forest fire. We hosed the roof to prevent any embers from lighting it ablaze. 2 of my friends that live near the cascades have had to evacuate because their home burned down and are staying at the local community college. So I have packed all bags just incase my home burns to ground and will head to my friends house. This is a picture of my backyard and as you can see the sky is really dark orange which means FIRE FIRE FIRE! I know this is a sign from the universe that we all need to wake up from this nightmare and not be super attached to materialism and material possessions. But the fire is burning  this way and I am asking if any of you guys or girls know how to fireproof a house?

If you have ample time pack easy to move expensive things in your car, but please get to safety.

No possession including a house is worth risking any harm.

Fire is extremely powerful, one of the most powerful forces of nature.

This is like asking what I should do if I see an avalanche coming towards me?

The simple answer is just run.

I'm very sorry that you are in such a situation and I deeply pray that you and your possessions and living beings remain unharmed.

Now all you can do is just wait. I hope some government services in your area are keeping a tab on the situation and informing residents on their evacuation options. Please contact 911 or get in touch with these authorities.

Go to your nearest community College or let them know that you would be coming in case.

Keep all your essentials ready and packed properly. Especially all your identity and other important documents like your college/university credentials and your medical files, records, receipts or prescriptions..

Now prepare mentally to get the hell out of there and I know this sounds traumatizing but do not think at all about loss right now. Because this is nature. We should always be strong enough to prepare for it.

There is no time to shed tears or be depressed. It's time to action without emotion.

Also this is a good learning to realize what I have realized for so long, that whatever we have achieved materially is absolutely useless because our greatest asset is each other and not the fake false world we have created where nobody is secure.

Our real security is in our health and peace and people who we can trust and who can support us no matter what.

Materialism is bullshit. It only causes people to live in false illusions and suffering.

If we get rid of this, our lives will be much more secure if we live spiritually..

There is no reason why someone should not be able to live just because they have no money or document or any other fake possession. These possessions have become more important than our lives..

Right now there is no point in thinking philosophically in your situation because it's an emergency.

So you need to take all the important possessions with you and take care of yourself.

I hope you stay fine. ??

@diamondpenguin

He is in Oregon and he dealt with fires for a long time. I'm sure he has a ton of tips.

He posted few videos now specifically about Oregon but he has older ones also.

I haven't watched his newer videos because he started going into conspiracies, but about this stuff he is great.

Thanks so much everyone. North Molalla is currently evacuating. My heart racing like mad. Got everything packed and ready to go once shit hits the fan. The material life really brings a lot of suffering if you are super attached to it. Thank god for all our firefighters out there. They have all the resources in the country on the fires In oregon, Washington, California.

Buy fire insurance and run out the house.

You can't stop a giant fire if it's coming for ya.

Unfortunately, it is hardly possible to strongly influence such natural processes only on our own, except as preventive measures at the local community level. I was only able to protect my home from a fire from within

I picked up some insurance today. I would just get some good pictures assuming you have insurance and leave if you feel like it will burn down. Not quite as bad where I am at, but it is getting closer.

Thanks. Everyone, I live in the middle of the Willamette valley,  The fire has taken out much of the forest. My area is on alert level 2 which means at any moment were gonna have to haul ass. This shit is nuts. Only if in the future there was a way to totally blockade a fire. That would be amazing. If you go almost anywhere on the west coast the sky is just filled with smoke.

Make sure you have sprinklers running surrounding your house to reduce the damage as much as possible.

@diamondpenguin

Be sure to take your identity cards and documents like birth certificates, driving license etc.

I'm saying this because my ex lost his Identity documents and birth certificate in the Katrina Hurricane and I was going to lose my certificates in the Hurricane Harvey in Houston but the hotel employee alerted me and I quickly went back and collected them. So that happens a lot during emergencies. People forget important things.

My ex is still without a birth certificate although he contacted Louisiana many times.

That's why the cards and documents are very important.

Dunno if this was already stated, but bug out bags might be a wise thing to research and make.

Wiki says..."A bug-out bag or BOB is a portable kit that normally contains the items one would require to survive for 72 hours when evacuating from a disaster, although some kits are designed to last longer periods."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bug-out_bag

Survival essentials:

  • Water
  • Food (calories are probably most critical, and salt with electrolytes if you're in a hot environment).
  • Warm
  • Dry
  • 1st aid
  • Communications

I dunno... I'm no expert, but from what I've read and studied (I took a two-year diploma in adventure tourism and backcountry travel along with recently studying a few what seem to me to be high-quality resources and books on survival), these seem to be essential for survival.

A quote from a book I read (highly recommend) call "Deep Survival".

  • “The maddening thing for someone with a Western scientific turn of mind is that it’s not what’s in your pack that separates the quick from the dead. It’s not even what’s in your mind. Corny as it sounds, it’s what’s in your heart.”
― Laurence Gonzales, Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why

Good luck amigo.

Stay safe, stay cool (no pun intended).

It turned that arsonists have lighting up fires all across the state of oregon. In the woods especially. Many have been spotted pouring gasoline and lighting up trees ablaze. Definitely a crime against humanity.

@diamondpenguin  how are you doing now? Have you been living in a safe place since the fires in September?

I hope all is fine. Was thinking today about this thread. Just checking.
