@Willie   @Anderz   yeah unity is totally unrealistic, and in any case the whole point of democracy is to have different parties which disagree with each other. But I'll be charitable for now and assume Joe Biden just likes the idea of unity and wants to de-escalate the anger and high emotions going round at the moment. I don't expect a particularly radical term of office, but maybe he'll get the US back to somewhere like where Obama left off. 

BTW I was checking the figures and have got that Biden currently has 279 electoral college points (56.6% of current total of 493 against 50.6% of total votes counted). Trump has 214 (43.4% vs 47.7% of votes counted). It means the US system (just like ours in the UK) isn't proportional and gives more to the winners than the also-rans, so the actual feeling of the country is closer than the result suggests. I don't see Republicans wanting to compromise on such a close result, it's about as close as our Brexit referendum was and look how that turned out, years of wrangling followed.  

Speaking of also-rans, I can't find how many votes went to the other candidates - there's 1.7% balancing figure up to 100% total votes - presumably they got zero electoral college points. The media makes them almost invisible.

@snowyowl Okay, reducing the divide might be what Biden meant. That's doable. I like the idea of transcending and including conflict, where we can fight about ideas on a level above survival fears. Conflicts can be constructive such as in Hegelian dialectic.

Similar to Spiral Dynamics, for as powerful as the Hegelian Dialectic is, I tend to see a lot of sloppy applications of it (for the H.D., often by Conspiracy Theorists who happened to take an intro level philosophy class at some point).

Nevertheless, there's a number of ways you could use it too look at systems, such as:

Thesis : Late Stage Capitalism / Neo - Liberalism

Antithesis : Socialism (from the Left). Also Fascism (from the Right)

Synthesis : Social Democracy (better scenario), -OR- White Ethno-State Plutocracy (worst case scenario).

Unity absolutely is the message that Biden and the democrats need to push for. This isn't the end, this isn't even the beginning of the end. This is the end of the beginning, and a message of unity and healing needs to take root like yesterday.

Giving Trump a freepass would be looking really poorly not only for us, but within history books as well. You can't leave such a precedent unpunished and ignored. And it makes the whole US democracy system look weak.

I don't see Trump getting away with what he's been pulling at this point. It's just a matter of time.

I doubt Trumpists will change their mind so easily, but the timing of the prosecution and revelations are important to reduce the upcoming hostilities to a minimum.

I think it'll already be pretty nasty in the upcoming months, I hope it won't go too far though

There's a core of MAGA supporters that more or less behave as if they were in a Cult; no amount of reconciliation or reasonableness on your part will be enough to get them to abandon the Cult of Personality they've fallen under. Some portion of this group are literal white supremacists who subscribe to a fascist ideology; these people need to be socially ostracized from polite society, as allowing thier views to become normalized is extremely dangerous.

Moderates on the other hand, or Conservatives who aren't Trump loyalists, should absolutely be reached out to and included. 

But we need to be able to draw distinction between people with whom we have political disagreements, and people operating in Bad Faith to undermine Democracy.
