You're getting pretty stuck on one example. It's not necessarily about the thing itself (sex or gold), but it's more about the tone and manner. Many people buy gold rings and necklaces that look "fashionable", and that isn't red. Having a lot of sex isn't necessarily red either, but having a lot of violent and exploitative sex is. Modifying your body parts is also about more than just a pure display of wealth or power.
