Explaining Mental Illness through Enlightenment

I’m curious what some of the great sages (or even people here) have to say about the cause of mental illnesses. It is strange how the amount of mental illness has seemed to increase in modern times. 
 

I personally have bipolar disorder type 1, and it has tremendously helped me to awaken. I wonder if it’s not just a curse but a blessing as well (spiritually that is).
