How the music you hear can affect your self-actualization journey? I listen to wide range of music but mostly heavy metal.

Most metal lyrics deal with dark subjects. I wonder if that can affect your mind in some level.

I listen to music like this..

It's the only type of music that resonates with me and makes me feel good.

I also dislike it when people say that dubstep is simply just throwing random sounds together because it is waaay harder than that.  The dubstep in these video is on point and makes the overall song flow.

Don't worry, it's just the usual response you get from close minded people about almost any new genre.

Personally, what I prefer about dubstep is the kind of dance that naturally comes out of it. Because of the violence and complexity of the music, you end up moving your arms and legs with a strength and an energy that is hard to find in any other genre. It helps me release all my repressed aggressivity.

And it's also incredible to beatbox, when you get good at it :)

Do you agree with me that the biggest lack in dubstep is more depth in the lyrics?

@JoseM I used to listen to Rammstein (because I couldn't understand the lyrics, my German is very basic) in high school to concentrate. There was so much noise coming from the neighbors that I couldn't concentrate without heavy metal!

I had many musical phases in my life, nowadays I listen to classical music and symphonies though. I find it is the best while driving, too. Symphonies make me very mindful of everything. And I'm a person who gets distracted by thoughts so being aware while driving is crucial for me.

And Chopin while writing is working out great for me for years.

I think everything that comes into your life is affecting you in the way you want to be affected. Rammstein affected me very positively, I could study for hours and I got the scores I wanted in my uni. entrance exams. But if you feel guilty the lyrics affect you in any negative way, just be mindful of how it affects you (your mood, your thoughts and emotions, your actions etc)

I've been getting into this weird genre recently.

I think it is affecting my mind because I am become much more aware of subtle sounds that I wouldn't have payed attention to before. I can hear the differences in the sound of clocks ticking or the differences in peoples voices at various stages of breath.

Music can inspire you, remind your higher values and goals, give feelings of happines and relax or make you think but it's best to choice carefully because there is a lot dumb out there, that said I believe that it's needed to approach new generes, artists and albums but as all of this it's so vast it's useful to look for the best for really expand the knowledge and inspiration of music. At the moment I consider among the best and useful for our journey artists such as Prince Ea, Tool, Dream Theater, Haken, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Persefone, Death, Meshugga,  Simphony x, Metallica

I don't think music affects your self-actualization on a broad level, the only thing that might have some impact is negative music that is straight out negativity and depressed thoughts, but even that might not touch you.

I found out that as I get more self-actualized, my music shifted to a more calmer style. Although I can't say it changed completely, I rarely listen to the music I did before. I love Jazz / Chillhop / Ambient music.

@JoseM Every style of music is an expression of a feeling/emotion. It has energy. Some positive, some negative. I do think it can affect your journey positively and negatively. Depending on where you are in your journey and how you use music. If you use music to escape from your current reality, escape from emotions, or trigger nostalgic memories of the past, you are only making the ego stronger. Identifying with music and the memories it brings you. Worse if you identify with the (negative) lyrics in a song (like "fuck the police", blaming others for your failures).

On the other hand, music can motivate you, give you a push in the back to go to the gym or give you energy. Music can bring you concentration also. Sometimes silence is better than music. Sometimes nature's sound IS music.

So always be CONSCIOUS of what music you listen to and why. The genre is unimportant; we all have different kinds of music that resonate with us.

I pretty much avoid modern pop music, and modern mainstream music in general, at all costs because it's low-conscious trash that makes me feel dumber and less self-actualized. :P These are just silly thoughts I'm sure, but music these days is so uninteresting and lifeless.
