Why does our universe have fixed set of laws in a particular way?

69 posts in this topic

We have gravity. We have electricity. We cannot move our body through a wall. We cannot move things with our mind. Nobody is casting spells that light the skies. We have the power to imagine things with our mind but the same cannot be done in the world where we exist. WHY and WHY NOT???

"Why does our universe have fixed set of laws in a particular way?"

Because it's absolutely free.

What do you mean by that it's absolutely free?

@An young being I mean it has the freedom to create limitations.

Why not in some other way than what we experience now?

Such questions are usually answered with the anthropic principle. Look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about. It's a somewhat unsatisfying but sensible answer.

A more interesting question I think would be: how is it we can understand these laws? Another famous one is: how is it math works so well in this regard?

@An young being Because then it would not be exactly what we are experiencing now.

The Universe/God/Light can and does 'create' anything it wants. Even the effect of forgetting that this is exactly what it wants, right now.

@commie, thank you, I have never heard of this philosophy ( thanks to my crooked brain), but it seems to come near to my view of these laws. The laws simply exist because we are living here and we are able to observe only the laws around us. There should be all possible laws existing in all possible ways in all possible universes, if it has to make sense in some way. If there is something else involved in creating life and this suitable universe to sustain life, even then it must have existed in a universe where all possibilities exist.

Does it create anything it wants or everything it can possible create?

Anything it can possibly create is everything it wants to create ?

In other words; it's all The Will of God.

observable universe has certain characteristics, that doesn't mean they are fixed. Just because we can't do something that doesn't mean it is not possible.

If we take as given the simple fact that physical objects act according to fixed "laws of Nature", we might ask why we human beings are the one thing in the universe that don't (seem) to obey such laws. I'm reminded of the poem:

"Creator of the starry heavens,
Lord on thy everlasting throne,
Thy power turns the moving sky
And makes the stars obey fixed laws.
Thou makest lesser stars grow dim
Before the Moon's reflected rays
When opposite her kinsman bright;
Then closer to the Sun she moves
And loses all her borrowed light.
Thou the Evening Star dost make
Rise cold and clear in early night,
And change, as Morning Star, his reins
To pale before the new sun's light.
When Winter's cold has stripped the trees
Thou holdest day in confines tight:
When Summer comes with torrid heat
Thou givest swifter hours to night.
Thy power rules the changing year:
The tender leaves the North wind stole
The Spring West wind makes reappear;
The seeds that Winter saw new sown
The Summer burns as crops full-grown.
All things obey their ancient law
And all perform their proper tasks;
All things thou holdest in strict bounds, --
To human acts alone denied
Thy fit control as Lord of all.
Why else does slippery Fortune change
So much, and punishment more fit
For crimes oppress the innocent?
Corrupted men sit throned on high;
By strange reversal wickedness
Downtreads the necks of holy men.
Bright virtue lies in dark eclipse
By clouds obscured, and unjust men
Heap condemnation on the just;
No punishment for perjury
Or lies adorned with speciousness.
They use their power when whimsy bids,
And love to subjugate great kings
Whose sway holds countless men in fear.
O Thou who bindest bonds of things
Look down on all earth's wretchedness;
Of this great work is man so mean
A part, by Fortune to be tossed?
Lord, hold the rushing waves in check,
And with the bond thou rul'st the stars,
Make stable all the lands of earth."

We have all of those things because you are God and you designed it this way so that one day, you posting as "An young being" would question it.

There is no physical universe, it's a mathematically generated shared experience and you're an eternal mind called a "Monad" that is hallucinating your experience right now.

What's gravity? Is it nature or is it something we made up to explain nature?

The latter.

That's how it was made. The spirit world has laws too, but there's a lot more room to move.

There are no more separate things imagined in your mind than there are in a world. You’re imagining there are separate things. Your reference to a world existing is the evidence of the power of your imagination / mind.

@cnfvmAnything is possible, I may agree. But the ways to make it possible, it isn't straightforward right? Like, if I want to fly now, I can't. Because gravity is always there as long as earth is there.

 @Boethius What laws do you think we don't seem to agree? Thanks for sharing this beautiful poem, took me a good amount of time to understand and enjoy it!

Are you sure it is designed in a specific way rather than being random in all possible ways? @justfortoday

If there is no physical universe, how is it possible that everything seems so perfect, there should be a glitch somewhere, right?

@LastThursdayIt is made up to explain nature. Why is nature in a specific way following a specific patterns rather than being something random?

 @Artsu That may be possible. But nobody is able to experience that it's possible as far as I know, beyond physical limits. If you can show me somebody, it would be very exciting.

@Nahm , my imagination is so powerful, yet I am not able to alter it. Why not?
