No Free Will?

24 posts in this topic

I am the awareness, but who is taking action? Who is writing right now? There is no I because it is conceptual, but there is only doing. An activity, but who is doing that?

Stick out your hand in front of your face and look at if for a few minutes.. And then randomly at any given moment decide to put It down.  Observe what happend and who or what exactly is doing the choice and how exactly it comes about.

Interesting...the choice is made by no one...

No free will is only apparent to me whenever I have a lot of free time. When I am busy doing things, I do a lot of things and I don't think whether or not it was me until later when I have some free time to contemplate.

It's just thoughts.

@Winny the one who says "i'm the awareness" is NOT the awareness.

"winny" is writing this. and asking questions etc. awareness is aware of the writing and the questioning.. the conceptualizing...

it's all a divine play. spontanoues ultimately. but from your relatative POV you very much have the "free will"

you are free to take any action you are able to - but you're not free from the inevitable effects/consequences of those actions.

I think the whole free will philosophical debate is misleading.

You can have both free will and determinism.

You can be both a self and a no-self. It's not one or the other.

You are the awareness, the watcher.. and you're the do'er.

'Who' made you say thank you ? It's you! ( 'you' which is perfectly fooled by randomness, the very principle of everything, including life )

@DivineSoda indeed

the answer is relative. it is and also is not - depending on which POV is being taken.

in the exact same sense as this: do characters in the book have free will?

absolutely: no. they will do what the author of the book writes for them to do.

relatively: yes, they have free will. the characters think about what they will do and make a decision. freely.

In absolute sense, is one story written or all the stories written?

Body is empty. Destiny is already written.

@An young being well. to answer your question simply... it is "yes"

but really... "stories" etc are just concepts

and ultimately it is all ONE GIANT INFINITE Story.

ONE infinite story with infinite parts/sub-stories.

Why are we able to experience just one story out of infinite stories?

My thoughts,

Free will and determinism and thoughts/concepts. They come after reality. The same as meaning.

BEING IS PRIOR TO THOUGHT.

So there is existence, the oneness of the whole, and then there are thoughts and concepts we attach to that.

The concept of free will and determinism are rooted in an individual identity being pushed around by outside forces.

However this is misleading, because there can possibly only ever be ... it ... Nothing more nothing less. Determinism? Free will? What weird concepts. There is only the dao. The way.

@An young being How could it possibly be any other way?

What if awareness is just a flat sheet of paper with some random sketches of different colors here and there ?

@An young being No analogy can translate awareness. Not even the word awareness. The dao that can be named is not the eternal dao.

Nothing is nothing and simultaneously everything (infinite or absolute). This is what consciousness is.
