What does this mean.

Hi. 
How would you interpret it when someone says “I’m not trying to manipulate you” when you haven’t said anything that would  makes it seem as if you believed they were.

hmm... interesting they would say that. I think there are a few options here. 1. They ARE trying to manipulate you or 2. they have been manipulated before and want to check in that their behaviour is ok (ie they are anxious that are being manipulative)

maybe he's not a good communicator and he's trying to prove his truthfulness by mentioning it, but he doesn't know it has a bad connotation.

or if he is a good communicator, he's pricking the bubble unskillfully.

Yes I’m thinking that she’s giving herself away by saying things like this. If someone feels the need to tell me that their not trying to manipulate me, or how much they respect me etc that’s a red flag and I’m planning on existing the “friendship”.
