How do you deal with challenging emotions/feelings midst conversation?

3 posts in this topic

I spend time preparing for it, think different scenarios through and go ahead with it.

BUT when I'm there in the present moment a lot of idk feelings/emotions bubble up and just hit me, which take away my concentration as I'm now forced to focus on them and not the actual conversation & the other person.

What can I do to work on this? I'd prefer to stay calm but it just happens unexpectedly and I can't practice it because I only get to experience them in these rare cases.

So my questions are:
What can I do to stay more relaxed the next time I'll have one?
&
If they do bubble up, what can I do in the present moment to deal with them so I could also focus on the other person and not say/do things I would regret?

One of the techniques is deep breathing.

What a dream, what a joke, love it   :x

Its not always easy - ideally you would be with emotion fully and the other person would just deal with it: your change in facial expressions etc. I always want to do this but my emotions get so intense my facial expression changes dramatically and it becomes weird. So one thing you can do is be with the emotion as much as you can and then look away whenever it gets really intense. At least that's my coping mechanism for now. Other than that just let everything be as it is as much as you can and you will slowly sink back into calm presence but there'll be some weirdness (strong emotions and resistance to being present with those emotions) to be present with before you sink into a more easy present state.
