Difference excitement and joy

4 posts in this topic

Hi all,

I’m trying to define my values, and I believe that one of those would be joy.

But when I define what joy tangibly looks like to me, I come up with moments like fully enjoying or looking forward to an experience, like playing tabletennis or going to a festival with friends, or highly enjoying a humorous conversation with someone.

Then I wonder: are those kind of experiences REALLY joy? Or is it in fact excitement? I don't want to build a life around excitement.

Hoping for any advice for how to verify the difference between excitement and joy.

@Meister_Eckhart Joy is the feeling while you’re doing something

Excitement is the anticipation or the feelings before you do something

just my definition

There's not much difference between excitement and joy. But I would say that joy has an element of being grateful to it.

It's exciting to have a humorous conversation, but it becomes a joy when you are grateful to the person sharing that excitement with you.
