Should we deal with the world as it is or deal with it how we feel it should be?

If we had to choose between the two, what would you side with, a Machiavelli approach of dealing with the world as it is (effectiveness) or a more “spiritual” approach if you like, of how we feel the world should be (fairness)?

While a little vague or I'm uniformed about the material your referring to, I'd say fairness.  Since both "as it is" and "fairness" are not determined ultimately, I'd go with the world  that I think would be most enjoyable for most.  My sense if you asked the most amount of people just to live by their determined view of fairness, we'd have a more pleasant world vs if you asked everyone to act effectively.
