Help me get out of my head

People the question has been  updated  in a new thread:

Quote

Yesterday I asked how to get out of my head, but today I learned I actually need to self-reflect more and go deeper into my pain and misery. The problem is my mind won't take me all the way to get the answers I need to solve my problems. How can I go deeper into my pain, feel it more so that I can purify myself and solve my problems.

@Chumbimba Keep letting go. :) That’s how you ‘ground in reality’.

Chumbimba is not trying to get out of his head now. He changed his focus since this thread . He says he need to self-reflect more and go into his pain and misery to  solve his problems so he can purify myself and solve them

I have been  meditating for almost 4 years (on and off) but my min still swallows me in imagination and concepts. Any techniques I can do to ground myself in reality ?

About four years ago I found this book “Seeds for the Soul” by Chuck Hillig. I really loved the book, had a change to have a counseling session with the author as well. There he described the technique where you painstakingly observe your feelings and thoughts at the moment of suffering. By doing so it helps to reduce the tension, and actually it helps to dissolve the inner pain. It helps me a lot. All the time when I have a heavy feeling in my chest or when crying. By putting your awareness on the feeling/thought you help to reduce the tension and negative sensation. Either seat down or lay down in your bed/sofa and observe the feeling, try to pinpoint it, where it comes from, what causes it, etc. It will reduce it significantly. Put as much attention on the feeling as possible. I promise you are going to melt it down with your awareness.

This is so interesting how our negative feelings lose their power in the light of the awareness.

Awareness does the magic. It is like a dawn with a pretty morning sun beam. Observe, observe, observe....as much as you can till your attention burns any distractions down.

I know it is not what you were asking in your question, but I feel like this technique can be used when grounding yourself in the present moment. First, scan yourself for any feelings or thoughts, drop them, become empty. This trick will set you for the next step. My take on it if you can not ground yourself in the present moment, probably something bugs you. Observe anything that might distract you.

@Galyna On the same topic "the untethered soul" by Michael A. Singer is an excellent read.

Cool, just placed the order to read on my upcoming vacay. I need a book to read on the beach.

Thanks, that was a good recommendation.

Also, have you come across Hillig, do you know the guy?:)

I really think he is a great person.

@Chumbimba What is it you want to achieve from your meditation? You are observing your mind and experiencing what it does naturally (creating thoughts through imagination based on its habits, tendencies and conditioning). Your mind will go quiet when the things it presents are no longer of interest to itself.

Deep contemplation exposes the mind-made stories/thoughts for what they really are. Don't attempt to turn them into something they are not, try to see them for what they are through enquiry.

For example, you thinking "My mind still swallows me," is a good start for this enquiry. You believe that you can be swallowed. When you get "swallowed", where will you end up? At the end of the "swallowing" what's going to be there? Will you be there?

It seems that you have a reference for yourself (what you believe yourself to be) and this reference is incorrect (but right for the moment :)). This "self" that you call "you" is created by your imagination and thus it is open to being "attacked" by your mind in your meditation practise.

I hope this helped. I have been in this position/reference before (or so it seemed).

Many of the people replying here have presented some great solutions also. But, you will need to find one that interests you so that the work will be enjoyable.

Peace dude :),

Lenny
