Career switch to software engineer from postman is it worth it?

9 posts in this topic

So basically in the following weeks I'll be starting a job of postman.

The thing is, I been learning the past 18 months almost daily programming.

So far I got three interviews, I was pretty excited to have my first developer job if I kept applying jobs because I did it all of my own (self-learn) but now I'll have to rethink my strategy since I landed this postman job

My biggest concern is, sure I could land a developer job but I honestly don't have a clue if it's actually a good job. Because if I land one and it turns out to be shit then I lose my postman job which is a pretty safe job it's difficult I'll get fired from it (the company is from the government)

My life purpose is not to be a postman nor a programmer, but to open a retreat of consciousness work. For that I would need money / time, so I thought that with enough experience of programming which could help in this two factors, with enough experience I could get paid much more than being a postman and if the position would be remote I could have much more time to start building my retreat

But tbh maybe the money of the developer job will never be enough to open the retreat so might as well just not expend 2-3years coding accumulating experience and just try to make a business online making an app/product on myself

I don't know, there are a lot of options but I'm not sure what could be the best. Advice from people that have worked in software engineering would be appreciated too

You said that both jobs are not your purpose. Then you could decide on the one that has a higher payout or makes you more fulfilled and happy while saving up.

I think as a programmer you have a chance of making way more money than at the post office. But as you have no work experience in that field it might take some time to land a job there.

You could do both. Maybe work as a freelance programmer from home 10h/week and then 40h/week(?) at the post office. You could also try to talk to the post office to get your hours cut and work more on the software development side.

If I was you Id look into ways to turn a profit on the consciousness retreat. So that I could concentrate on that 100%. But I can understand why you dont want to do that.

@Javfly33 Use your mental space as a postman to contemplate. This can be an incredible opportunity to make your dream come true. Programmers can hardly get mental space for themselves unless they're extremely experienced and disciplined. Trust me, I've been doing this for 16 years and it's still hard sometimes.

@universe Yeah I probably look into part time roles see if I can land one of those.

@ajasatya What do you mean exactly with mental space? Like you think about work at home you mean?

@javfly33 I thought software engineers are in demand ? What country do you live in ? Do you have a degree because one of the reasons I am pursuing that field is job security :/

I wouldn't recommend getting into Saas right away when you have yet very small experience of business, software and have no money to fund it.

Good path could be starting a software development agency first and then transition into that.

Service providing business is very straightforward and requires only business skills and no capital at all, since you can get clients consistently for free without THAT much hustle (although there'll be a lot of hustle in the beginning) and will allow you to build your branding/marketing/sales/management skills which what you'll ultimately need anyway to build a profitable Saas company

Yes. The job is good and pays well, but you have less time for yourself.

@Chumbimba Yes, they are relatively in high demand compared with other jobs.

I don't have a degree. If you have one I'm sure it will be more easy for you to land a job in Spain.

@ajasatya I see. Thanks for your advices!

@Hello from Russia That seems a very good idea. What would be different between being a freelancer and having an web-dev agency thought?

There is not that much difference, as a freelancer you're pretty much a one person agency. Good practice is to start solo and slowly grow up as your need to delegation raises up and you outgrow manual skills. That's what I'm doing with my design biz right now
