Deciding between free teaching with parttime job or entrepreneurship

2 posts in this topic

I know that I want to teach. The problem is, I'm not yet sure what to teach. I think I can figure this out with trial and error through starting to teach on youtube.

I now have two choices. I can work as a high school teacher, possibly parttime, and figure out what I want to teach in my free time. Or I can try to be an entrepreneur.

Becoming a high school teacher seems to be best option. I don't have any experience in entrepreuneurship. I do have enough savings to try it for a year or so, but if I don't have enough income (at least €1200 a month say) in the summer of 2021, life will become difficult.

I do have a lot of experience in teaching. Although I still need to officially get my teachers' degree, I think I can do the work relatively easily. I may also just learn more about teaching in general through teaching in high school. And having a solid income gives me the freedom to explore what I want to teach, and to choose to teach the things with the highest value, not the things that sell best.

However, I'm afraid that I will be walking around in the high school system, feeling like I'm wasting my time on learning students mathematics which they probably won't use later in life. I would prefer to learn them about emotional mastery or making relationships work.

I'm also afraid that I'm just choosing being a high school teach because I'm overly cautious regarding entrepreuneurship. On the other hand, the downside to being an entrepreneur is that your teaching should sell well, which aren't always the teaching the world needs the most.

If something has a high cost or a greater sacrifice it is generally going to yield a much higher reward. High school was an absolute waste of my time. The stuff they taught to me was mostly garbage and most of the teachers were just someone who picked a safe job and liked the steady paycheck.

You need to go explore some more options and find what you really love. Practice on some things. Try doing some toast masters to feel out what it could actually feel like.

A college education is pretty expensive, but even more expensive is spending a life time doing something you don't enjoy. I would weigh your risks out and see what is worth it to you.
