I read a book about Pornography, it left me thinking: Why it's even legal?

74 posts in this topic

I listened to the audibook: Your brain on porn by Gary Wilson

Porn has terrible affect on the individual. And 99% of people don't even take it serious. One of best ways to kill human potential is through porn.

In my opinion, many people underestimste affect it have on the brain. It's not even properly studied, because internet pornography is quite new.

It left me thinking, if porn has so many bad affects on humans, why it is even legal? It just ruins so many people's lives.

I read some countries banned it. Great decision. What you guys think about this?

By the way, this book is good source of information on this topic.

+ I am not saying this from stage blue moral perspective. Like don't watch porn because it's evil and you will go to hell. That's BS. I am saying this because porn literally f*cks your brain. Kills the spirit. Kills human's potential inside out.

@Rasheed
I don't think legality of things ever has been a problem. This is never the right way to regulate such things of course only if nobody gets hurt against their will.
The problem is that it's literally glorified by society nowadays and the dangers are not pointed out, most people aren't aware of the dangers at all.
So I would put more into raising awareness instead of repression.

Persobally, I would do both. I would first raise awareness and then block it, so that way, we completrly fix the problem.

I read that book a while ago. There are still people who say porn is innocent. Man. It still hasn't caught the mainstream.

Agree. People joke and laugh about it. Make it okay. Like it's normal. It's ain't normal. It's ain't okay. It is designed to fuck people up.

+ These porn websites are specially designed to kill your brain because more they do that, more views they can get.

@Rasheed  I agree that porn isn't the healthiest way to explore your sexuality, especially for a lot of young teens nowadays who get exposed to it from a very young age, which that scews their sexual development. But, won't blocking it create a lot of perversion around it? Like a forbidden fruit; like a form of repression? - I think it would be better to create awareness around it, so people can learn to deal with it in a conscious way.

What are your thoughts on the legality of prostitution btw?

I think, it's important to be informed about porn. It's a complusive thing. So, raising awareness about it, will be most important. Only AFTER that, and WHILE doing that, I would ban it.

I never thought about legality of prostitution, I am not informed. I can't tell you anything about that.

Why is junk food, alcohol and other drugs like cigarettes & coffee, gossip, tv, and videogames legal?

All those things are somewhat bad for you and have a high potential for addiction.

You can take everything that you like - that produces dopamine in your brain - and say that it will limit your potential.

There are a lot of people who love these things and porn in particular is a medium that people are drawn to.

Who is to say that human potential should be the #1 value of our society? And why dont we trust people to make their own decisions? I mean making one thing illegal is one thing. But if we do that, whoy stop at that one thing and not start to sacrifice more freedom for human potential.

Taking away freedom is not something that should be decided after reading one book.

You can always change your perception on porn. If you see it as harmful, it will be harmful to you. Like anything else, really. If you let it affect you and influence your life, it will. It works like any addiction. If you put a cake on a table, free to eat. One person will take a piece of it, another will 2, and there will be people who devour the whole thing. Then it becomes unhealthy. People are not aware, that's the problem, not porn or cake or anything else. If you have enough awareness and control over your life, you can stop watching it, if you feel like it holds you back from reaching your higher self. It would be like giving up any other materialistic manifestation. Until then you can very well use it as a tool for the purpose it serves. Like a fork for eating cake or cake for tasting good, porn is for entertainment or releasing sexual tension, or what ever else it serves you. It's a tool, don't give it any more power than that. Oh and people can be tools to. ;)

Or in other words, you have control over any physical manifestation in this world, it doesn't have any power over you. Only if you choose to give it power.

Well is child pornography legal? No.  Does that solve the issue of it's availability on the internet? No.
Poeople are and have been watching it for decades. And even if it was legal - would you watch it? Probably also no.

My point is that by labeling and making something 'bad' or 'illegal' won't make the situation any better.

It's only out there because there is a (huge) demand for it. The only way to solve this is by teaching or making every individual aware of why it's evil or 'bad' for our society (crippling mental health of children)
well and of course money has its own role in this too.

It was the same with tobacco. The science told us it was bad but it took decades before it sunk into mainstream consciousness and dignity. Porn will be recognized the same way as tobacco one day, but it will take time.

Porn fucks brain so much, it not YOUR decision no more. YOU making a decision is a fiction. 13 trillion cells in your body make a decision.  If porn fucks those cells up, then what kind of decision those cells will make?

yes.

Not completely,but still 99%.

Imagine if it ware legal, all the pornsites would have tones of porn vids with kids.
You barely can find porn with kids on the surface internet, and if you go on the deep web you'll get the FBI OPEN UP in a few hours/days.

no,you don't get it,you didn't read the book.

A porn video per se is not a problem

Unlimited full hd porn combined with the coolidge effect,is a huge problem, especially because a lot of kids consume it and get hooked at a young age.

Banning it would help people who want to get rid of it to do it easier and it would prevent other people from getting addicted.

Is like saying that banning weapons in America is not an option, that people need to change.

That's a point but it's not 100% true. The other normal contries have 0 school shootings cases because only a small percentage of people have weapons.

Is not normal to get a weapon as easy as it is to take a candy.

I do not have an anti porn agenda that I want to push down your throat, but for a lot of individuals(aparently not for Leo),porn is very very addictive and has a lot of negative effects. It can even cause Erectile disfunction (Pied->Porn induce ED).

Watch this for more information.

You have no idea the complexity of the issue.

You can't just ban porn. The ban would be less enforceable than a ban on alcohol or weed.

You can't ban a thing which 99% of people want and love.

By banning porn you think it would make society healthier, but actually it would do the opposite as now men will have no way of releasing their sexual energy in a safe & healthy way. So now it will manifest in really toxic ways such as rape, violence, abuse, bullying, theft, mass shootings, and terrorism.

Repressing the sex drive makes it worse, not better.

If you outgrow porn, good for you. But 99% of society is not ready for that yet and they will come after you with pitchforks for trying to boss them around.

Porn serves a crucial function in society. You can think of porn stars as essential workers. As essential as farmers.

There is a very big difference between abstaining from porn by your own free choice vs some authority figure forcing you to abstain from porn when you are not ready for that yet.

It's foolish to try to legislate peoples' sexual cravings.

Porn is essential for life. Porn addiction is not.

@Leo Gura Whilst banning porn is ridiculous, I think most men should outgrow porn not for any moralistic reason, simply because it’s an addicting habit and causes massive dopamine stimulation that we simply weren’t designed for. You can see more perfect babes in 15 minutes online than a cavemen saw in his whole life.

Look at how popular sites like Onlyfans are becoming where everything is paywalled. The size of the industry is insane, and thirsty men feed into it so you can’t really blame the women. Not that I’m above it, I struggle massively myself with it.

Outgrowing porn is very much an individual choice just like drugs.

Also think about men who don't get a fair access to women because of multiple reasons and some men find it difficult to date women.

Porn is a boon for them. I don't think they would ever want to outgrow it.

The solution can be balance and control instead of outgrowing.

No moreso than sex.

Porn can be consumed responsibly, just like alcohol can.

There's way too much no-FAP group-think floating around the internets.

Don't forget how many lives are ruined by impregnating the wrong female.

Those "scientific" studies you cite a far too short-sighted about the function that porn serves in society. It's effect on your brain is only one small factor. There are many other factors at stake.

How about a scientific study on the effect of accidentally impregnating the wrong female? Let's see how that affects your brain and your wallet.
