Marcus Aurelius - Consciousness?

15 posts in this topic

Throughout his meditations, Marcus references life and death as if they are indifferent from each other.

He explains how when one reaches their death, they are returned ''into that which gave you birth: or rather, you will be changed, taken up into the generative principle of the universe''.

There are countless other references to awareness / consciousness he leaves.

The more I read of him, the more I get the idea that he isn't referring to the well known Roman Gods, but the god that dwells within.

For someone who lived 2000 years ago in Rome, he had a pretty good idea about the nature of the universe. I find this particularly odd...

Have any of you noticed this while reading Meditations? Any further info would be appreciated!

"Marcus Aurelius and Non-duality" Would've been a better title for the post, lol

@SamueLSD I read his book a few years back before i got really into non-duality. It was interesting, but i would always get triggered when he mentioned god lol.

Do you feel good reading his book? I find when some people write, like the buddha, i get a good feeling from certain lines or quotes. Have you experienced this, and would you count The Meditations as something that invokes good feelings.

@Raptorsin7 It does resonate with me

Marcus wasn't talking about God in a religious sense, as far as I know. The people who translated his book were Christian, however.

@Raptorsin7 It would be way to much. Then this place would be renamed from Self actualized to Bold actualized.

Well it's written in guidelines that we need to consider this place as zen temple but c'mon we all to be bold as those monks, we respect but not that much.

Great book forgot main thing.

Bumping this with yet another intriguing quote by Marcus:

"Think always of the universe as one living creature, compromising one substance and one soul: how all is absorbed into this one consciousness; how a single impulse governs all its actions; how all things collaborate in all that happens; the very web and mesh of it all."  - Meditations, 4.40
